Mitt Romney, evangelicals seek marriage of convenience
The State ^ | Apr. 30, 2012 | David Lightman

Mitt Romney and the Republican Party's sizable bloc of evangelical voters are about to engage in a marriage of political convenience.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee's march to the nomination proceeded largely without strong backing from the conservative Christian community.

But with Romney now the only hope that conservatives have to beat President Barack Obama in November, a partnership has begun to jell.

Gary Rose, the chairman of the politics and government department at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., agreed. "Santorum was their guy, but more important is their agenda of dislodging Obama," he said. "I don't believe they'll stay home."

Actually, the last time the Republicans ran a Romney type against an Obama type was in 1972, and Nixon won 60% of the vote, 49 states and 520 electoral votes. And just like Romney, Nixon was despised by most of those that voted for him, I still remember my dad saying that Nixon was the biggest asshole ever, but Mcgovern would destroy the country if elected. Now I know the country has changed a lot since then, but the conditions this election season seem to be the same. Do I like Romney, hell no, but just like my dad in 1972, I will do my duty, I owe it to his memory.

everyone has their priorities I guess. It will be interesting to see what happens if he wins without overwhelming evangelical support. That would be a real game changer.

What's going to be real enlightening is the blame-game that all the MittWitts will be engaged in when their boy Romney loses worse than McCain did exactly because of his lying, Left-wing, Progressive Liberal record.

LOL. Love your way with words.

I got mad today when I thought back to Romney’s early interviews before he announcced his candidacy, when he would play coy about his decision whether he’d would run.

My God, he was lying big time! He had worked for the past 4 years putting his organization in place and solidifying the GOP-E money backers!

Complete liar and fraud!

Actually, that was pre-internet which means conservatives and conservative activists are much more informed about the record of that lying, left-wing, Progressive Liberal Mitt Romney, it was pre-Obama, a crypto-Communist with a no holds barred approach to destroying his opponents and lying about anything, basically a much worse type of Democrat than what Nixon had to face.

It was also Pre-Reagan, we had not won for many cycles, we had not experienced what a real conservative was like, and any Republican would actually do.

I also, correct me if I am wrong, believe that there is no comparision between the scorched-earth, dirty-rotten tricks and out and out lying that Romney did to destroy his opponents in the GOP primary and whatever Nixon may have done.

Nixon was very moderate, almost liberal in a lot of his views.

Romney's record IS lying, left-wing, and Progessive Liberal.

There is only a passing resemblence between the two campaigns, that is between Romney and Nixon.

I'm not buying it. It's Lucy holding the football, and I'm not Charlie Brown.

And before you badmouth Nixon too much, you might think about the things he did manage to do. Like get elected. Twice.

Do what you like. Romney is another liberal in a long line of losers that the GOP has tried to cram down the conservative throat.

There was no internet in Nixon's time, or Johnson would have topped out at school teacher or convicted felon.

It's a brave new world.

ABL Anyone But Liberals.

You already know how that is going to go down, because the Mittwitts (great term BTW) are already pre-emptively engaged in it. You already can read it on this very thread.

The war being waged by Obama AND the GOP Ruling Class is to EXTERMINATE Conservatives from any political relevance.

What we have here is Obama and the GOP-e,working together, covert allies for the purpose of dismissing Conservative Christians and rendering them irrelevant.

War is being waged on us and the clueless party hacks have convinced a bunch of unprincipled and convenience voting Republicans to vote for the nominee CHOSEN to lose to Obama, so we have the APPEARANCE of a choice.

I cannot comprehend even at FR how gullible and easily beguiled so many of my countrymen have become by this evil.

No wonder Jesus asked the question of whether or not He would find faith on the earth once He returned.

At least with Obama, the socialists are confined to one party....a Romney win will complete the takeover by the Socialists of both major parties.

I would vote for Nixon. I came 'that close' to doing just that, second term anyway.

I would never vote for Romney.

Disagree with that notion.

The Socialists have been in the GOP for a good amount of time. Most of us former party regulars had cognitive dissonance about that fact. We rallied around Bush after 9-11, (and rightfully so) but we also chose to look the other way with the Socialism being pedaled about as ‘kinder, gentler’.

The GOP is filled with Socialists as assuredly the Democrats were some 70 years ago. It just took time for the masks to come off and reveal for us that the DNC is become a pure MarxoFascist Communist party.

The GOP-e has already shown us that they will be no different. They now know where the power will lie, and they will do anything to share in it.

I agree with most of what you say, although I’m not sure that Romney was anymore liberal than Nixon. Nixon was a huge government type of guy, and as for his social views, we do know that just as Romney had a state Supreme Court jam gay marriage down his throat, Nixon had the Supreme Court of the US jam abortion down his throat, and did nothing about it. In fact, apparently from what can be found about his views, he thought that abortion should have been legal for rape, incest, etc. The problem with Reagan is that a whole generation of voters has now grown up not knowing the truth about him, and the last two GOP presidents were horrible at explaining conservatism, either because they were embarrassed by it, or just didn’t care enough to explain it to uninformed voters that now get their political views from the NEA and John Stewart. In the short term we are screwed as conservatives, unless we get a Palin or West as VP, who can spend their terms teaching the country the truth. So as you can see, I don’t know the solution to our problems, but all people have been doing on FR and everywhere else for the last year is firing friendly fire at each other, and until that stops we can’t find any solutions, can we?

I think you are right in a lot of your post, but I disagree about Romney being chosen to lose. There is to much money being lost, and even the leftist on Wall St realize that. They also realize that until the wonder boy in the white house is gone, and his juvenile policies gone, the money isn’t coming back. I think the money people see this as a change election, like Reagans 1980 win. If they can get prominent Christians and Conservatives to publicly come out against Romney, and he wins, they will have marginalized us for decades. Many of these Christian leaders are aware of this, and so they will endorse Romney. It isn’t because they are “selling out”, it is because they see what the result of them not backing him, and him winning anyway would be. Just my 2cents, and its worth every penny:)

If you really want to read something interesting, read about the Republican primaries in 1968. Ronald Reagan won the popular vote 1,696,632 (37.93%)to Nixons 1,679,443 (37.54%) but Nixon had more delegates at the convention and won the nomination. Just imagine if Freerepublic had existed then, it would have made this year look like a picnic.

The media chose Romney in collusion with the Obama regime to craft an illusion of ‘choice’ in this election. It is the media in conjunction with the GOP-e and the Democrats who are using our primary system to CHOOSE our candidates for us.

Do you not remember they were the one’s early on in this primary saying “Romney would be the biggest problem for Obama”, when their records are nearly identical, setting the narrative I continue to see regurgitated here?

The media and Obama would not engage in such politics unless they preferred Romney to face Obama. I’m convinced of that. Given what Romney, the media and Obama did to the conservatives in this primary, how can you doubt that Romney was chosen by the media, the Democrats AND Obama?

Since Romney was chosen to be the nominee by the Ruling Class, obviously it is for the purpose of losing to Obama.

The legitimate money has already walked out of this country along with opportunity for any Free Market Capitalist, so Wall Street is irrelevant now in terms what used to be. Trillions have been redistributed and more than you can imagine pocketed into those very Wall Street firms looking for a seat to be able to influence the Politburo.

What remains is opportunists to advantage a Fascist Enterprise system that will make crony Capitalism look like a Junior Achievement club.

Such is the history of Republics falling into tyranny.

As far as selling out, if expedience trumps principles, then one never had principles to begin with, at least not the kind of principles that you can stand before the Lord or our Founders with.
