The Secret Service protection was costing the government around $40,000 a day, a fact that became controversial as Gingrich's campaign wore on and faded increasingly into irrelevance.
The decision came down from the administration, according to Gingrich press secretary R.C. Hammond.

Call me jaded and suspicious but why is the public being informed about this? Shouldn’t this be kept somewhat quiet for his protection? I just fear that some nut job will think they can hurt him since his protection is being ended.

Something is not right about the $40000/day figure. That would be enough to pay a $200000 yearly salary to 73 people.
