The MA Dems wanted a single payer, state run health care system, and they had a veto proof majority in both houses. Romneycare stopped that. It is the prototype for Obamacare because of the same reason....they couldn't get a completely government run health care system ala NHS passed. For MA, Romneycare was the conservative alternative. 85% of MA residents supported government healthcare. MA has the right to mandate whatever insurance they want to...people can leave if they don't like it. Romney has vowed to repeal Obamacare specifically because it oversteps the power given to the federal government.
But he implemented it and personally issued "marriage" licenses.
He obeyed the order of the MA Supreme Court....but only after the legislature failed to pass a compromise and the USSC refused to hear an appeal. He always opposed gay marriage, even testified before the Senate in favor of DOMA.
Yet he donated to Planned Parenthood and put $50 abortions in Romneycare.
He donated $150.00 nearly twenty years ago, and has since renounced his pro choice position. The $50 co pay for abortions in Romneycare was based on state law that mandates coverage for abortions in government funded health plans. Romney didn't "put it" in the health bill.
Apparently, the whole truth of a matter doesn't count on your list of moral absolutes.
He had to deal with a legislature that had at most 15 Republicans in both houses combined. It’s amazing he prevented single payer from be implemented. As an aside, he was a great guest on Charlie Moore.
Massachusetts is quit a throw from the entire U.S. what one would do in that state is different from what one would do for an entire country.
