It varies from year to year, but we often have a multitude of acorns in these woods, and this is a sought after area for hunting. If we didn’t mow, our yard would be overgrown with trees in a very short time.

I see what you mean. This guy is just like the one I had. I didn't take it myself some hunters gave it to me.

I guess deer digestion filters out acorn grodiness better than pigs’ do. Pigs are omnivores and are not ruminants like deer with their own little built in silo.

You may not like the acorn fed pork, but I like it just fine, and folks pay good money for jamon iberico. You can bring me your acorn fed pigs 30-70 lbs. ;)
It may be an acquired taste. Acorn finished pork has gone on for a long time in the European Mediterranean area.

Ya know maybe I shouldn’t talk till I’ve personally tried it. It might be a matter of love/hate. A lot of folks on FR have said they don’t like the acorny taste of older wild porkers.

I don't particularly care for anything over 70 lbs for wild, personally (hard to handle by myself, and can be gamey).
It also may depend on the area. Here in Texas, the acorns do a fine job of making the little guys fat and tasty.

You do live a sheltered life.
One of the best holiday dishes I've ever eaten was Bean-n-Elk....our Supervisor went out to Montana every fall and hunted.
This was when I worked for Northwest Airlines in Minnesota and now in Florida, a lady that my wife works with fishes, with her husband, for sport, and give the fish to my wife for some very tasty consumption.
Your faith is weak.

"...all 50 states have laws in place that make it a crime to waste or leave in the field any game animal taken."
Uhhh, not entirely. I hunted fall '10 in Alaska, took a 8 1/2 ' brown bear. Skinned it and left the rest, except the heart which I insisted the guide take. We had it for dinner, tough but tasty, and the guides and outfitter all said it was the first brown they had ever tasted. I assume it is a carrier of trichinosis.
I also have helped my BIL in Mich with deer eradication, killing 20 one summer on crop damage permits. Not required to recover them at all, but we butchered at least half of them.

I don’t like people who trophy hunt or go shooting animals for fun and sport. I’d never tell someone not to do it nor would I support laws to outlaw hunting in that manner. I simply refuse to take part in it or have anything to do with such actions. The OP stated his/her opinion and I don’t see any place when they demanded you or anyone else stop hunting for sport....
No one asked for your unsolicited opinion either, but you are free to give it, just as long as you follow FR’s rules and the comments meet Jim and the Mod’s approval.
And guess what....your opinion is as valid as the OP and others who have said they also do not like trophy or sport hunting.

Out neighbors male and female ALL hunt for food. If they don’t need the meat there are plenty of people in the community that do....relatives and neighbors get first dibs.
Local locker will even clean, butcher and package it for you just like a hog or cow.
