Supporters of the protests that followed the suspicious death of Trayvon Martin are raising a good question: What next?
Many have compared the shooting of the 17-year-old to the brutal 1955 murder of Emmett Till, the black Chicago teen who was murdered in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman.
The comparison is far from perfect. George Zimmerman, 28, the volunteer neighborhood watchman charged with second-degree murder in the shooting of the unarmed youth, claims self-defense. Till's murderers were enforcing the old South's willfully racist political and social system.
But as markers of their very different eras, the two cases have much in common. Till's death inspired Rosa Parks a few months later to refuse to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus. Her move helped to launch the Montgomery bus boycotts, a decade of protests and landmark civil rights legislation.
If the Trayvon Martin protesters are looking for a similar channel for their anger and energies, they have a perfectly appropriate target in "Stand Your Ground" laws.
That's the Florida law that Zimmerman cited, leading to his release by police without charges, a move that sparked protests by Martin's family and their supporters nationwide.
Florida's law says that a law-abiding person "who is attacked" has "no duty to retreat" and "has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm."
Two problems: The law is unnecessary and downright dangerous....

There will be a lot more dead victims in Detroit. These days the news is full of stories of Detroit blacks protecting themselves with extreme prejudice.
I expect that more knowledgeable freepers will expand or correct that recollection.
Clarence is concerned about his homies getting shot up while they are committing their crimes. No thanks Clarence. I prefer to defend my home and the lives of my family and friends. Tell that to your homeboys. I’m getting too old to “retreat”. Your homies are young and in shape. They can do the “retreating”.
Alinsky's second chapter, called Of Means and Ends, craftily poses many difficult moral dilemmas, and his 'tenth rule of the ethics of means and ends' is: 'you do what you can with what you have and clothe it with moral arguments.' He doesn't ignore traditional moral standards or dismiss them as unnecessary. He is much more devious; he teaches his followers that 'Moral rationalization is indispensable at all times of action whether to justify the selection or the use of ends or means.'...
"'The organizer's first job is to create the issues or problems,' and 'organizations must be based on many issues.' The organizer 'must first rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; fan the latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expression. He must search out controversy and issues, rather than avoid them, for unless there is controversy people are not concerned enough to act. . . . An organizer must stir up dissatisfaction and discontent.'"

Who are the clowns we’ll rely on to define “sensible”?
“Stand your ground” IS “sensible”!
Laws that mandate that I must be able to run faster than any potential attacker are NOT “sensible”!!!
Hey you commie, racist gun grabbing Stalinist... you can have them when you can pry them from my cold dead hands... and I will NOT make it easy for you.
LLS
I keep reading all this nonsense by racist, knee-jerk, reactionaries who are convinced not only of Zimmerman’s guilt but of his motives. Yet I think, had Martin beaten Zimmerman to death on the streets of Sanford would it have even made the evening news, or would it have been relegated to the black versus hispanic street gang violence section?
This isn’t really about SYG so much as it’s about those predators and their supporters who simply will not abide with you, the armed citizens and those who don’t want to cede their neighborhoods to the ferals, having the means and wherewithal to resist.
How dare anyone ask the lil Trayvons, (who it is now patently clear was exactly the person that the neighborhood watch was created to defend against) who he is and what he is doing skulking around? How dare anyone have the means to defend themselves against assaults that if not stopped, would have led to death?
The ferals in this nation want you to cower in your homes, bow and scrape in unjustified guilt, because that is exactly where their wildly skewed view of justice believes you should be. They are indoctrinated generationally that the knockout game, polar bearing, and snatch and grab flash mobs is right and fair, and you had better smash anyone who says otherwise.
Clarence Page is dorkier than Urkel.
Note to Mr Page:
IF there was more self-control & justice done WITHIN the black community, there wouldn’t be nearly the need we have today for “Castle Doctrine” and “Stand Your Ground” laws.
I don’t know where YOU live, but communities in general are tired of the crime & the mollycoddling of criminals.
Budget constraints have cost hundreds of jobs in the LEO ranks, and those of us who have NEVER done anything illegal in our entire lives are frankly sick & tired of watching our backs & our property at all times because of the dangers we are exposed to.
I personally live rural, with perimeter fencing & NO TRESSPASSING signs posted. In my state, that is sufficient to go after someone with lethal force IF they cross into my property without my wishing them to do so. Having livestock helps, also. I am allowed to protect them. I am willing to do so.
I have worked for over 55 years to have what little I have & I am not willing to turn it over to a criminal thug without a fight. Working self employed for years, often with over 70 hours a week brought me to this point & I ain’t giving it up easily!!!!! Keep your rhetoric!!!
I not only WELCOME laws like Stand Your Ground-—I will do my best to expand them.
Those laws grew out of the constant attacks on people in communities where the criminals always seem to get right back out on the streets. Even the sex offenders—which are the lowest of the low, IMO.
I sincerely hope you are living in a safe community, Mr. Page.
With the trouble Obama & Holder are doing their best to foment, the end results won’t care what color you are. Neither will the weapons we will be forced to use when we are attacked.
Clarence! You ignorant over educated dope!

I’ve been listening to the spineless on FoxNews and they basically say you should ignore strange prowlers in your neighborhood if you carry concealed.
I see Clarence is still workin’ on the plantation
That picture of Zimmerman with the wounds on the back of his head is certainly inconvenient for Mr. Page, Mr. Last Page.
"Stand your ground" IS a sensible law.
Fox?! And a lot of those demented lefties think Fox is a “right-wing” network, LMAO!
