.Gov. Brian Schweitzer, talking Friday to a national news website, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might shy from talking about his familys Mexican roots because they came from a polygamy commune in Mexico.
Schweitzer made the remark in an interview with The Daily Beast, a news and opinion website, after being asked whether Montana might be a swing state during this years 2012 election.
According to The Daily Beast, Schweitzer said Montana likely would vote for Romney, but that Romney, a Mormon, might have trouble nationally because his father, George Romney, was born on a polygamy commune in Mexico.
Schweitzer, a Democrat, said later that he wasnt misquoted, and that his comments had nothing to do with Romneys faith or his church, which does not condone polygamy.
Schweitzer said he was describing the dilemma facing Romney, who is in trouble with Hispanic voters because he took an ultra-right-wing position on immigration during the (Republican) primary.

There is an "abuse" button right below every post. Slap it any time you feel frisky little guy.....
Why would you call me a name? You got spanked when you said, “no Romney man has ever served the United States as a military man”. Don’t take it out on me. Learn to post a complete thought. Shorthand kills.
Threading the needle as you push Romney, kind of a liberal troll, well I know that.
Romneybots, always the same.
LOL, romneybot insults you while you post for Romney?
So you want to avoid him, I understand, pushing Romney can be a problem, the important thing is to try and keep it low key, under the radar.
See post 51.
On this thread you are pushing Romney, Santorum is gone.
Do you believe you’re actually convincing anyone of your points, by namecalling?
There’s no way for me to know if there are ‘Romneybots’ on this thread.
But if you think Romney is the guy I’ve supported, you’re just wrong.
Sure as heck though, I’ll not vote for Obama.
That’s not happening.
If you’ve got a better candidate than Romney, then please get out there and nominate him or her.
Quick.
Avoid who? Jim is anti Romney, but he is not an anti-Morman bigot.
“Neither Romneys dad nor his grandfather were polygamists.”
Romney doesn’t -practice- polygamy but it is illegal so of course he doesn’t. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t SUPPORT it if he was faced with pro-polygamy legislation in this time where homosexual “marriage” is being legislated on a monthly basis.
It could be advanced in a matter of time, on the same grounds as sodomite “marriage”. What would Romney do if faced with legislation championing polygamy as he once was faced with gay marriage as Mass Governor? Where would his sympathy lie? Well, he’s a high Mormon Elder, so let’s see what Brigham Young had to say on the matter around the time the Supreme Court struck it down:
“Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned; and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given, and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.”
-Brigham Young - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)
I would not be surprised to see a President Romney appoint court judges sympathetic to the LDS beliefs (pro-gay and hence pro-polygamy and liberal, anything goes judges).
He said in this campaign that he “would be “true to his faith”. His FAITH is pro-polygamy. Just because the courts forced his forefathers out of the nation to practice their abominations - and forced those here to CEASE the practice - doesn’t make them any more anti-polygamy than they were then.
Romney is and would be a traitor. I will not vote for a proven liberal traitor. I will vote for a conservative, little known though that conservative may be.
The establishment hijackers can kiss my ass.
Nor is ansel12!! Thanks!!
Do you have any concept of how many “relatives” a polygamous Mormon family that traces itself back to the beginning of the cult has?
This is about MITT ROMNEYS direct line, you signed up in 1999 and this is the first Romney thread that you have been on? You missed the last five or six years of Romney here at freerepublic?
Are you stoned, drunk? what do these people have to do with Mitt Romney?
Sweet! I'll go down and try to hunt up a few more wives. I mean if one can make your life a living hell, 8 should should just be...errr....better.
You got me, what do you mean?
What do you two mean when you say that the Romney family was not polygamist?
Which Romneybot insulted me? You insulted me by calling me a “Romneybot” which I am not. I was curiously reading the thread when you made your post and foolhardily stated: no Romney man has ever served the United States as a military man.
He smashed you with a great reply. Deal with it. Plus, what’s with this “we” stuff. We’re all FReepers and we all want what’s best for the country. Each of us has a right to conscience and that should be respected. Name calling just diminishes you.
Now I hadn’t known about Romey’s lack of military service. So I did a quick search after reading your post on it. Here’s what I found: http://www.biography.com/people/mitt-romney-241055
It states that Mitt Romney was married in 1969. I don’t know all the ins and outs of the draft, but IIRC married men weren’t drafted. So I looked up his Dad: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Romney He would have been 34 when WW2 started. It says he was chief spokesman for the Amer. Automobile Mfg. Assoc. during this time. A lot of people didn’t go to war and IIRC the average age of a US soldier during WW2 was 26. It sounds like he did something for the war effort, although he sounds like a crummy governor. It also says that he was “born in Mexico to American parents”.
If that’s true then Mitt Romney’s male line didn’t have many chances to fight in an American war. Your implication is that either they’re “cowards” or “draft dodgers” or something. I don’t have enough information to conclude you’re right, but I do know many people who love America and have never served in the military. So what are you getting at?
I’d venture to say you’ve done a lot more research on Romney’s history than I have.
I heard Blenn Beck last week explaining, that on the “polygamist commune” the Romney’s were an monogamous couple.
That’s what I understood him to say anyway, wasn’t paying close attention since I didn’t know at the time, we’d end up in a, er ... posting contest on the matter.
Anyway I don’t think I can really clarify anything I’ve said, without simply repeating myself.
Nice chatting with you. FReegards.
