.Gov. Brian Schweitzer, talking Friday to a national news website, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might shy from talking about his familys Mexican roots because they came from a polygamy commune in Mexico.
Schweitzer made the remark in an interview with The Daily Beast, a news and opinion website, after being asked whether Montana might be a swing state during this years 2012 election.
According to The Daily Beast, Schweitzer said Montana likely would vote for Romney, but that Romney, a Mormon, might have trouble nationally because his father, George Romney, was born on a polygamy commune in Mexico.
Schweitzer, a Democrat, said later that he wasnt misquoted, and that his comments had nothing to do with Romneys faith or his church, which does not condone polygamy.
Schweitzer said he was describing the dilemma facing Romney, who is in trouble with Hispanic voters because he took an ultra-right-wing position on immigration during the (Republican) primary.

LOL.
See this is why FR is so outstanding. :D
Yea, yea. Last I checked, I live in the most conservative state in America. We have Mormons, Methodist, Baptist, Evangicals, Episcopals......we are conservative. We voted for Santorum. So piss off, noob, and go back to DU with your anti-Morman BS......
You think that those are males in Romney’s direct line?
You really think that for five years at freerepublic we have been posting that nobody has ever been in the military who has ever had the name Romney? Or that we were saying that none of the Mitt Romney line of males has served out nation in uniform?
Look at post 73 and 84, we have been dealing with you romneybots for more than five years.
Says the romneybot who advertises that he is socially liberal, as he posts on an anti-Romney, social conservative site dedicated to stopping Romney.
Romneybots, they never change, never tire.
neither my dad, nor either grandpa nor, as far as I can figure out, either great grandpa served in the military. Exactly how does that disqualify me from seeking public office????? pathetic!
What do you two mean when you say that the Romney family was not polygamist?
Have you considered a hobby?
Stamp collecting is fun, I hear.
Your direct line has a perfect, unbroken record of non service for 170 years?
I find that hard to believe, and since you have only searched your dad and grandpa, you don’t know.
Your service to Romney is graded as fail.
I can do this all night A@@hole. My state voted for Santorum...... You're a sleazy, anti-Morman bigot. Try again.
Have you considered a site that is not fighting against Romney?
Your state?
You post here on an anti-Romney, social conservative site, as a pro-Romney, anti-social conservative poster, and you keep telling us how your state voted in a primary?
Weird, very Romtilian.
I respect and consider the heartfelt opinion of this site’s owner.
Yet, the name of this site does, ironically start with the word “free”.
Let’s not fall into the liberal trap of groupthink. Sharing a common goal is a good thing, but we’re not simply followers here.
Obama is the real problem.
Obama is the real problem.
Obama is the real problem.
Are you smoking crack? I said I voted for Santorum.....as did the entire state of Oklahoma. You come on here and belittle all Mormons because you don't like Romney. You're pitiful, and dense.....go roll on the floor and speak in tongues.....idiot.
I am 73 years old and I'd venture to say that my great grandparents go back 170 years (my dad goes back over 100 years)
the question is still valid, what does their service in the U.S. military have to do with my qualifications to run for office????
If you are going to keep directly challenging the owner of this site, then why don’t you ping him?
Then you can tell him that he doesn’t understand the meaning of the name he chose for his site, that the word “free” means that he is trumped, that he has to accept pro-Romney campaign efforts.
Democrats are that stupid...but I wonder if the attack on Ann Romney has a purpose. Obama came out strongly and said that attacks on spouses are “off limits”? Is he being gentlemanly or is it because Michelle had a no-work six figure job that doesn’t exist any more? What else is hidden in Michelle’s closet?
It is very common for Illinois politicians to be paid off through a spouse or children. I suspect this is the case with Michelle and why Obama and Co. want to take it off the radar.
This very well might be an attempt to take Obama’S freaky family off the docket as well. Polygamy, Islam, Rev. Wright and who knows what else is in there back in Kenya. How many jobless college age women could afford all the air travel Ms. .
With all due respect, I’m sure Mr. Thompson can keep an eye on things here just fine, without me bothering him every post.
If you think you need to report me, I suppose perhaps you should.
I’m well aware of JR’s position, and put some thought into staying on the right side of that line.
Besides the obvious, of Mitt’s father trying to be a war time president while his son is avoiding the draft in France, and then that son, trying to become a war time president, while his five military age sons avoid military service.
There is the fact that conservatives started looking at this odd situation and then discovered that the family has always avoided military service, not that they had physical problems, or skipped a generation or two, but that it was a firm, dedicated family tradition, since the Romneys are dedicated anti-conservatives, it is a disturbing revelation to learn about this record.
Also you don’t know much about your family and it’s military service, so you can hardly show that it has a perfect, uninterrupted record of non service since they arrived in America, as the Romneys have, unless of course, your grandfather was the first one here.
