GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Saturday that his cash-strapped campaign machine will march forward into North Carolina next week -- despite reports that stops in that state and elsewhere had been placed on indefinite hold, according to a report by Fox News.
Filed federal reports indicated that the Gingrich campaign had $4.3 million in debt and has $1.22 million cash on hand. The campaign raised $1.6 million in March but spent $2.01 million, Fox News reported. Other public records revealed that Gingrich started the month of March with $1.55 million in debt and only $1.54 million in cash reserves.
Gingrich has won two primaries -- South Carolina and his home state of Georgia. What he had hoped would be a victorious swing through the South was disrupted when former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum tallied wins in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama and Mississippi before suspending his campaign.
Wayne King, vice chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, told Fox News that he got a call from Gingrich who personally told him campaign events are on for next week and that a revised schedule is forthcoming.
This latest word came after King revealed that he got a call Friday informing him that Gingrich was canceling his entire trip to the state next week. King passed on word of the cancellation to activists and county chairs hosting the candidate. Now it is a scramble to ramp events back up, Fox News reports.
Gingrich and his wife, Callista, were scheduled to make seven or eight stops in the counties of Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, Catawba, and Surry.

Newt needs to stay in just in case Romney finds a reason to quit.
So what’s your point serpent fixer? If Newt’s all washed up, why all your hysterics? R U a Paul supporter, Romney fan, or Obama, or just running from the fight in general? What do you care? The GOPE cram down is okay with you? Just shut up and swallow is okay with you?
Someone wants to hold the dang line at no cost to you and you’re cramping over his expenses?
What’s this really about? You’ve no skin in this game any way, shape or form, but for barking at those of us who do. What is your deal?
How much money does he need? Who the hell doesn’t know who Newt is already and where he stands? Hell just stay on the ballot and do a few rallies at this point. The negative ads won’t work anymore.
I usually don’t do this but you have zot to go. IBTZ.
Looks like the black power or communist fist :/
I wish I could take my Santorum vote now (unless Santorum releases his delegates to Gingrich).
What “hysterics”? Heh. Couldn’t be calmer.
I never said it was “OK with me”. I said it was reality. My point is that we’re better off coming up with a conservative plan going forward — not wallowing in clingy desperation for something that cannot be.
There is always a line to hold. Gingrich is no longer that line. The nomination race is over. Wasting conservative resources on him is throwing good money after bad.
Paul is a loon. I’d sooner vote for Hillary than Obama. Never even considered a Romney primary vote. After Perry dropped out, I was split between Newt and Santorum. Texas primary still hasn’t happened. I’ll still vote for Newt when (if?) we have a primary — more of a protest vote than anything.
While people waste time on Gingrich, the real question — “Now what?” — remains unanswered.

I’ve been around FR a good long time. Since 1997, in fact. My conservative credentials are solid.
My position — that Newt has lost — is not contrary to that of FR mgmt so far as I am aware.
SnakeDoc
I guess you are unfamiliar with Jim Robinson’s position on Newt. You are trolling it doesn’t matter how long you have been posting actively on FR. I’ve seen others zotted for less. You are going from Newt thread to Newt thread posting the same ant-Newt drivel OVER and OVER again. YOU’VE MADE YOUR POINT NOW BUZZ OFF JACK WAGON. I am sure your Romney blow up doll is begging for your attention.
Sorry ... that should’ve been 1998, not 1997.
SnakeDoc
Your’re a worm that has been around a long time. So what.
Debate is not “trolling”, except perhaps to the oversensitive. Whining to the moderator is rather pathetic.
If my posts are repetitive, it is because responses to my posts are repetitive.
My understanding is that FR policy is against Romney ... not shackled to Newt. I’m not for Romney. Never have been.
SnakeDoc
So, I’ll be around a long time coming.
SnakeDoc
And you’re from TEXAS? Snorting about “clingy desperation”? I don’t believe it. Guess the ALAMO would be another “wallow” beneath your pay grade.
I’m well aware of the Alamo. One of my ancestors died there. He died for a cause (holding Mexicans at bay so Houston could gather to defeat them)l. He didn’t waste time on a lost political candidate.
Newt is not a cause. He is a politician. A politician that has lost. The cause for which he stood continues. It just continues elsewhere — not in his dead campaign.
SnakeDoc
You don’t have to ‘splain the Alamo to me, buster. You waving that surrender flag loud and clear says you and the word, “cause”, don’t belong in the same sentence.
My condolences to your ancestor for your embarrassing tutorials on mediocrity.
Not there Onyx....they’ve either taken it down or gearing up for Sunday.
Let’s FReep this poll, guys!
If elections were today who would you vote for?
