Me too. Popped on the seat more times than I care to remember :) But today that will get you arrested for child abuse. And that's probably one of the reasons 6 yr old got away with the tantrum. No fear of culpability.
Teachers don't have that option now.
Shall we ask this question to the parents of young children killed by other children????

Ok, I’ll say it - I went to elementary school in the early ‘40’s. That’s a whole lot of years ago. I remember scotch tape over the mouth for talking out of turn in class, stern warnings for running in the halls, standing in corners and some were shut in the coat closet - where they promptly ate the lunches of other students.
Older kids were sent to the principal’s office (my brother being one) where the principal wielded a paddle. I know times have changed - unfortunately in our whole society - but there has to be a better way of handling a misbehaving child than calling in law enforcement to subdue a 6 year old child.
Is obozo going to have a statement on this incident also? He seems to have an opinion on everything else. Remember he gets his discipline advice from the PM of some backward country in the middle east - Turkey?
This is what the left wants, we have now made it the only option. Call the police or let the kid continue to misbehave. Hopefully her trip to the police station will make her reevaluate her actions. Her mom will not make her behave so she will have to learn on her own.
You’re right about the child abuse. Thats got a lot to do with kids being bad at school. My kids are very well behaved at school and make good grades. However, me and their Dad are the reason they behave, and they have been taught that actions do have consequences, good or bad. They have also been taught the value of doing the right thing when no one is looking.
A 6 yr old acting out like that is having psychological and or family problems. The parents should be looked at and held responsible for her actions, not her. She obviously needs help.
I am retired from this department. Juveniles are almost *NEVER* placed in cells at the Milledgeville Police Department, a practice seemingly continued in this case according to the incident report: http://www.13wmaz.com/assetpool/documents/120417104050_milledgeville-student-incident-report.pdf .
As was done in this case, juveniles are typically supervised in the squadroom, a large combination classroom/briefingroom/breakroom open to all department employees.
My wife was a teacher for quite a few years, first in a Christian school then in a public school. Her experiences included having her life threatened, having to deal with teens having sex in her theater, and other hair-raising episodes. If anything, those stories just reinforced my points of view on the matter.
My kids will learn something at an early age. Never talk to the police
I’m not the one who said they should have a holding cell in the classroom. Just taking that to its logical conclusion. If you have a kiddy holding cell, you’ll have a kiddy Bubba. The comments I’m reacting to are weird.
I was around them when I was a kid. They had detention, and the lady in charge of detention was a Miss Lynch, who would make Helen Thomas look like a super model, and she was hell on wheels when she was in a good mood WITHOUT using corporal punishment. A few sessions with Miss Lynch yelling in your face like a drill sergeant, and that was the last time you ever came to school late, fought, or talked without raising your hand. Tantrums? Not unless you wanted to see Miss Lynch.
I shared that video with my kids a few years ago. It is really good. Something that all kids and adults need to view and be aware of.
Your reaction to all this is similar to mine. I was surprised how many people thought the school and police acted properly in this case. I was also suprised to see how many people thought the actions of this tantrum throwing 6 year old were evidence of some deep societal or personal problem. I simply do not believe the average 6 year old has enough strength to do all that much damage, no matter how upset they get. This was an overreaction by the adults, in my humble opinion.
If my kids act up in school, I'm telling them to call me and I'll take care of it in-house. If it's a police matter, I'm telling them to never talk to the police, and to never tell the truth or lie to the police as it will get them in big trouble. Having the police involve changes things, and IMO not for the better. I may be tough at home, but when it comes to the legal system, I will ALWAYS take my kids side. Always, because the legal system is brutal in juvenile and criminal law.
I got news for you. You break the law every day and you don't know it. Look up all of society's rules if you have time. You county. State. City if you live in one. Federal regulations.
Society has rules because there are too many busybodies, politicians, and others who make these rules, need crimes to fight, and tickets to write.
You are right - they have been making laws for how many years now - 200?. This way they keep a job and we keep paying them with increases.
You described the method very well, and I agree, it worked well for me, too, when I had a young child in throes of a temper tantrum.

Have you read the incident report at post 149? How would you have handled the situation, other than by calling the police, knowing that you are not allowed to impart physical discipline?
