Hundreds gather in Brattleboro to protest Vermont Yankee nuclear plant
The Republican ^

ore than 1,000 people turned out Saturday on the Brattleboro town green for a rally to show support for decommissioning the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, one of the oldest nuclear power plants in the country.

The event included speeches by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Gov. Peter Shumlin, both of whom are calling for the state's wishes to be honored and for the 40-year-old Vernon reactor to be shut down.

New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. owns the plant, whose state permit expired in March. The Vermont Senate voted to decommission the plant. But the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the plant a 20-year license extension anyway, leaving the plant in legal limbo. In January, a federal judge issued an order that allows the plant to continue operating while the case plays out in court.

...

"(Let's) say to the aging nuclear power industry," Shumlin said, "shut them down, go home, tell the truth, we're moving on, we're moving out , you go first, we're not going to rest until you're gone."

According to the VT Dept. of Public Service this is the breakdown of sources of electricity for the sate in 2003:

VT Yankee - 35.5%

Hydro Quebec - 28.2%

Other Purchases - 20.4%

Instate Hydro - 9.2%

McNeil Generator - 4.9%

New York Power Authority - 1.2%

Instate Thermal - .6%

Do Shumlin or Sanders have plant to replace that lost capacity, besides buy it from Canada?

How do they think they'll power their Chevy Volts, Nissan Leafs, cappuccino machines and lights for the hydroponic dope?

I vote to permit the shutdown for Vermont only if they remove themselves from the grid, also.

OK, is it 'hundreds' or 'thousands' that turned out for this idiot's errand?

This dipshit writer can't even keep it straight, unless they meant to convey '24 Hundred Attended Protest', which wouldn't suprise me either..

Another thing they protest is wind power- Protect Our Ridges! They don’t want to see turbines lining those hilltops.

I bet they are not keen on foreign oil. I do know they think burning wood is OK.

I was researching some issues for the Ben & Jerry’s lawsuit long ago, and discovered that the major source of dioxins in Vt is from wood stoves. This settles on the land, cows eat it, it gets in their milk, and the dioxin goes into ice cream. “But that’s OK!” I was told, “It’s from woodstoves, not like the evil dioxin that comes from planet-raping corporations!” Dioxin, btw, also comes from the paper they package the stuff in.

They protest all forms of energy because at their core they are anti-human.

I hate to use the term “idiots”, but in all honesty, where do they think they’re going to get the electricity to power their electric cars, TVs, telephones, washers, dryers, lights, heat, air conditioning and a few dozen other modern conveniences?

The leading cause of lung cancer in third world countries is...wood burning. Incomplete combustion in makeshift wood burning applications like wood stoves used for cooking and heating produces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are carcinogenic. But, again, according to the wackos, that is okay, because it is lung cancer from a "natural" source, not something caused by eeeeeevil corporations (i.e., tobacco companies).

With the incredible drop in prices and increase in supply of natural gas, nukes are pretty much a non-issue. Why would anybody want to built a nuke instead of a nat gas plant?
