Ozzie Guillen to Return to Florida to Apologize for Fidel Castro Comments

PHILADELPHIA -- Miami Marlins manger Ozzie Guillen will apologize again for telling a magazine he loves Fidel Castro.

Guillen will return to Florida following Monday's game at Philadelphia and apologize Tuesday at Marlins Park. The Phillies and Marlins are off Tuesday before the series resumes Wednesday.

Guillen had told Time magazine he loves the Cuban leader and respects him for staying in power so long. The manager said before Monday's game he's had sleepless nights because of his comments and wants to make amends.

"I'm going to make everything clear what's going on," he said. "People can see me and talk. I've already talked to people. But I think it's the proper thing to see my eyes. They can see me and ask whatever question they want. I think sooner is better. Better for the ballclub, better for me."

He apologized over the weekend after the story broke last week.

A Cuban-American group planned a demonstration Tuesday at the ballpark. The protest was organized before Guillen said he would fly to Miami.

"I know I hurt a lot of people," Guillen said. "I want to get the thing over with."

Guillen said the news conference would be open to "anybody that wants to be there."

Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker was suspended for spring training and the first 14 days of the 2000 regular season for making allegedly disparaging remarks about homosexuals and foreigners.

Why shouldn't Guillen suffer a small fate for praising a murderous, totalitarian dictator?

It’s good to have Guillen state upfront what his views are, rather than try to hide it. The only reason the coward is apologizing is his boss realized it’s going to upset would be ticket buyers.

The part that mystifies me is Ozzie Guillen got to be a very wealthy man under the evil American capitalist system. Yet, he loves Castro?

Ozzie Guillen is a moron.

He truly is a clown. He was quoted in the Cincinnati Enquirer over the weekend saying that the reason he stays out of trouble when on the road is that he always heads to the hotel bar and gets drunk and then goes back to his room and sleeps it off - after EVERY game.

Poor Marlin fans, they thought they were getting a manager but instead they have a punch line.

"I know I hurt a lot of people," Guillen said. "I want to get the thing over with."

Sounds pretty sincere.

Being from Venezuela, you’d think Guillen would know better.

nah... he's just a drunk with that part of his brain filter fried out. Like our Vice-President. It's a sign of brain damage.

Of course, Guillen should be suspended by the team. It’s a free country, and he can say what he wants. But, by the same token, a company can do what it wants. With his horrifying endorsement of one of the most evil tyrants of the Twentieth Century, he showed that he is not worthy of managing a team that caters to those the tyrant abused.

You can bet that Commissar Lefty Selig won't fine Guillen for praising Castro - even though saying what Guillen did might be detrimental to business, given the demographics of South Florida and the fan base of Guillen's new team. That's because Selig and Castro are old pals, having hobnobbed with each other in Cuba a few years ago.

But Selig and company did fine Guillen two or three years back for calling a "gay" Chicago writer a politically incorrect name.

Double standard? Hypocrisy? That's Selig's stock in trade.

The only reason the coward is apologizing

There are certain people who reporters should not be shoving their microphones in front of and Guillen is one of them. He's just a dumb baseball player from Venezuela who knows only one thing.....baseball.

There's no doubt in my mind that what he said about Castro was not intended to be interpreted as supportive of him. Unfortunately no one chose to pursue his statement with follow-up questions to find out if he truly did love and admire Castro. If they had, it's likely he wouldn't had to issue a follow-up press conference.

I think this is a classic "gotcha" moment that the MSM thrives on........

Guillen had told Time magazine he loves the Cuban leader and respects him for staying in power so long.

As a follow-up to my prior comment, I would love see the entire Q&A that led up to his comment in order to put it into proper context...........
