Though Gingrich and Romney throughout January engaged in some of the most personal attacks of the presidential primary campaign, Gingrich said Sunday that the two are at peace with one another.
"I hit him as hard as I could, he hit me as hard as he could -- turned out he had more things to hit with than I did," Gingrich said. "That's part of the business."
Gingrich said that if Romney wins 1,144 delegates and clinches the nomination, he will do "everything I can" to support him going into November.
"We are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama," he said. "I will work as hard for (Romney) as I would for myself."
He said he's already spoken with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus about how he can help going into November. "Beyond that ... I'll go back to a post-political career," Gingrich said.
Still, he said supporters are urging him to stay in.
"I do think there's a desire for a more idea-oriented Republican Party," Gingrich said.
Gingrich said he's seeing a "great response" in the upcoming primaries for Delaware and North Carolina, and will "see what happens" in those two states. Despite his comments Sunday, the candidate had recently told The Washington Post that "nothing" could get him out of the race quite yet.
Gingrich said he wants to campaign for changes in the party platform -- namely, to push for domestic energy production, to "stand up very firmly for religious liberty" and to reform the Social Security system.
Romney is leading the field with 660 delegates, according to the Associated Press tally. Rick Santorum is trailing with 281, followed by Gingrich with 135 and Ron Paul with 51.

Funny you should mention Huckabee, which reminds me of listening to him for about 10 minutes this noon, because the station that used to carry Rush, replaced Rush with shmuckabee.
Mind you, I was driving, I had to turn it off before I fell asleep at the wheel! And later, when his great big friend and buddy, Whorealdo Riviera came on and Huck let him know how much he “loved and admired him, blah, blah, vomit, vomit, (On his great courage for apologizing to the Trevon Williams family) I tore to knob off the radio so I could never tune into Shmuckabee ever again.
I now have another channel that carries Rush, replacing the one that canceled his show!
You don’t get it. It is over. Conservatives need to get on with the work of replacing establishment Republicans, and holding the Romney crowd to conservative ideas. Santorum is a distraction at this point. He isn’t even going to win Pennsylvania.
“But the big picture is so clear, and is what Santorum diehards wont admit, which is that Newt had the best qualified candidacy against Mitt”
Virginia proved this not to be the case, which is why the VA ballot loss was so devastating to his campaign at the time. Yes, he was riding high in the polls, well above Romney in December.
Iowa reinforced the perception that Newt was not competitive with Romney. He wasn’t a factor there at all.
Newt has had severe cash and organization problems that have persisted through his campaign now. Even in the best of cases, I really can’t see how he would have overcome Romney’s advantages in a two- man race. I remember the polls, and Romney destroyed him in the head to head, whereas Santorum defeated Romney.
It’s all about favourability. Santorum has had much higher favourables than Newt, that when you take out people, he’s generally their second choice. Not so with Newt.
If you can show me a head to head poll from back then that shows otherwise, I’d like to see it.
The rest of your spin is just BS, the kind your candidate spews daily. The results are already written and you can't talk your way out of it.
Newt will remain a major adviser and mentor in helping our future effort to fix this mess and Santorum will be labeled as a whiner and a disruptor. He already carries that stigma ahead of himself, before this is even decided. He is clearly delusional as are his supporters.
This conservative is going to continue working to defeat the establishment. Feel free to check in sometime. :)
“He is clearly delusional as are his supporters.”
Coming from Psycho-Freep, I have to laugh.
Defeating the establishment is much bigger than Santorum beating Romney (which is highly highly unlikely at this point).
Romney/Obama means that the establishment wins. We get Romneycare or Obamacare.
What does the establishment care which Care they get? Either way they get the lurch to the left that they want.
Maybe you’re willing to settle for Romney but I did that with McCain, and what did that get us? Obama. Every time we nominate the moderate squish, we lose. And then we hear the battle cry to nominate yet another moderate squish because ‘it’s his turn’. And we lose.
America deserves better than a choice between Obama and Romney. Hopefully they get it, but if we quit now, Obama wins.
Right, you have been here since March 10 of this year, like you are already a Pillar of wisdom on this forum. Do you have any other good jokes to tell us?
You’re welcome to read through my history. I am no fan of Romney, or the establishment.
The focus on Santorum is not helpful. He is not going to win the nomination. Period.

Well, I am glad you found a new channel with Rush. I may be being too optimistic, but I don't this huckabee thing has any chance to hurt Rush at all...
I think I understand where you are in your romney support right now, and it is genuine and out of an abundance of caution... so I do respect that. Only I don't have an abundance of caution. I just think the time for that is once Romney makes it on his own to 1144... up until then, we should support Newt and believe in miracles!! Maybe think about that. Because if Romney gets the nomination I will join you in your "stop the bleeding" campaign bigtime.
In other words, I am not leaving the trail...
"Forget what happened before, and do not think about the past. Look at the new thing I am going to do. It is already happening. Don't you see it? I will make a road in the desert and rivers in the dry land.
- Isaiah 43:18
Guy goes into a bar, theres a robot bartender.
The robot says, What will you have? The guy says, Martini. The robot brings back the best martini ever and says to the man, Whats your IQ? The guy says, 168. The robot then proceeds to talk about physics, space exploration and medical technology.
The guy leaves, but he is curious, so he goes back into the bar. The robot bartender says, What will you have? The guy says, Martini. Again, the robot makes a great martini, gives it to the man and says, Whats your IQ? The guy says, 100. The robot then starts to talk about NASCAR, Budweiser and John Deere tractors.
The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time. He goes back into the bar. The robot says, What will you have? The guy says, Martini, and the robot brings him another great martini. The robot then says, Whats your IQ? The guy says, Uh, about 50. The robot leans in real close and says, So, you people still happy you voted for Obama?
I believe he has much to offer, perhaps even more after, since we really have not seen the end to his wonderful career yet. We still need his great wisdom and style.
Newt is right that Romney will have to work for it if he deserves the nomination. And even then, we will have to be in his face to remind him that he promised us (Conservatives) the moon to believe he won't let us down and to nominate him.
I would never go so far as to support him or promote him, but if he wins, then there is little else we can do, but make him keep his word. And he had better do exactly that!
Glad you liked it a good FReeper taught me that. :)
Dude, I think I already have you figured out, your MO is very familiar, but don’t worry, welcome back and keep up the good fight. If you don’t take a stand for something, you will fall for anything.
You have much to offer and you aren’t a half bad writer. That’s 90% of the battle in the Conservative world these days.
btt...
Newt will be on Hannity tonight at 9 pm, Monday.
GO NEWT!!
You’ve got that right. Santorum supporters have “selective” memory.
In total, anti-Gingrich super PAC Restore Our Future disclosed $89,962 in expenditures opposing Mr. Gingrichs candidacy since the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa, where he came in fourth. Thats 96% of all negative spending in the past week by super PACs, the newest and most controversial form of political action committee, which can raise unlimited sums of money but arent permitted to coordinate with the campaigns.
Heres how negative spending by super PACs looked over the past week:
Negative Super PAC Spending Since Iowa Caucus
Newt Gingrich
$89,961.75
Mitt Romney
$1,548.41
Rick Santorum
$1,276.23
Ron Paul
$1,121.73
