Though Gingrich and Romney throughout January engaged in some of the most personal attacks of the presidential primary campaign, Gingrich said Sunday that the two are at peace with one another.
"I hit him as hard as I could, he hit me as hard as he could -- turned out he had more things to hit with than I did," Gingrich said. "That's part of the business."
Gingrich said that if Romney wins 1,144 delegates and clinches the nomination, he will do "everything I can" to support him going into November.
"We are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama," he said. "I will work as hard for (Romney) as I would for myself."
He said he's already spoken with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus about how he can help going into November. "Beyond that ... I'll go back to a post-political career," Gingrich said.
Still, he said supporters are urging him to stay in.
"I do think there's a desire for a more idea-oriented Republican Party," Gingrich said.
Gingrich said he's seeing a "great response" in the upcoming primaries for Delaware and North Carolina, and will "see what happens" in those two states. Despite his comments Sunday, the candidate had recently told The Washington Post that "nothing" could get him out of the race quite yet.
Gingrich said he wants to campaign for changes in the party platform -- namely, to push for domestic energy production, to "stand up very firmly for religious liberty" and to reform the Social Security system.
Romney is leading the field with 660 delegates, according to the Associated Press tally. Rick Santorum is trailing with 281, followed by Gingrich with 135 and Ron Paul with 51.

Privileges and immunities clause of the Fourteenth says otherwise. The federal government determines citizenship, not the states. Extent of legal recognition of personhood is one of the primary jurisdictions of the federal government since the 14th was established..
“Any government that can outlaw abortion, can make it mandatory.”
Not so. One, the first amendment protects freedom of conscience. Two, the fourth prohibits unreasonable search and seizure. No such constitutional provisions bar outlawing abortion outright.
It’s still not votesplitting. What happened in MS and AL was voter preference.
Santorum won enough votes in both to overcome Newt, and Newt finishing second, means that conservative voters preferred Santorum to Newt.
This is why MS and AL were so important to Newt, because he needed them to have any hope of continuing on. It’s also why when he lost that his vote total has dropped off so dramatically.
Vote splitting by Santorum, would be a state where Newt finished ahead of Santorum, but Santorum prevented him from winning.
As we saw happen in Ohio, Michigan, Wyoming and Alaska, where Newt split the conservative vote permitting Romney to come up the middle.
Both AL and MS were close enough between those two, if they were drawing from the same voters, Newt wouldve cleaned up like he did in SC and GA, if Santorum had not been there.
Plus the fact, CNN exit polls showed 6000 democrats voted for him in both AL and MS, which was far beyond the margin of victory.
And then there's this:
"An honest résumé on Santorum would read: 1) I was present in congress when Newt Gingrich was successful; 2) I voted for everything I am running against now. Still, Santorum would be able to derail the Gingrich campaign and that is what the RNC was counting on. Youre welcome Mitt!
Conservatives need to pay attention to how he stayed in until now once again, they will get what they deserve for supporting a candidate willing to use such underhanded tactics in the race.
But in Tennessee, they tried a different underhanded tactic and succeeded Hours before the election, Santorum met with several state delegates declared on the ballot for Gingrich, one even the Co-Chair of the Gingrich campaign, convincing them to switch to Santorum delegates even though the state ballots declared them all for Gingrich.
It amounted to election fraud, as millions of Tennessee Gingrich supporters cast vote after vote for Gingrich delegates that had quietly switched to Santorum hours before the election. The old backroom switcheroo had worked and Santorum won Tennessee, snatching the number two spot in the GOP race from Gingrich for the first time.
As I write this morning, Santorum demonstrates just how far out of check his ego really is by suggesting that he would consider Newt Gingrich for his running mate. As we used to say in my old football days, Santorum cant carry Newts jock strap He isnt qualified for more than Newts water boy!"
The rest is already written One need only understand that united defeats divided every single time.

The article has some good sound numbers on just how effectively the establishment succeeded in dividing the conservative vote, the same as 2008, allowing romney to slip in - the way huck did for mccain.
The GOP is afraid of Newt's baggage. The evangelicals won't forgive him - after all, they have a saint to rally round. Those are the only two reasons Newt isn't winning. And those aren't reasons enough to give up... or give in.
It no longer matters and there is equal blame to go around to all sides. What matters now, is how do we beat Obama, with who we have left? And it is pretty much a formality from here on out.
JC sems to have an awful lot of time on his hands, and spends it making futile irrational arguments and baiting people to spend their time responding to them... fool me once...
Even after winning Iowa...understandable because it was a caucus state, and he and his family virtually lived there for two years... it would still be Newt if Santorum had dropped out and endorsed him and conservatives had rallied around him as the anti Romney, telling Mitt to take his lying ad millions and shove it.
JCB asked, just name even one state Santorum caused Newt to lose.
So I named two.
It won’t wash to say, oh, I meant name a state Santorum caused Newt to lose to ROMNEY.
But the big picture is so clear, and is what Santorum diehards won’t admit, which is that Newt had the best qualified candidacy against Mitt, but he wasn’t deemed personally perfect enough therefore they jumped to the deemed-more-perfect Santorum, thus damning Newt’s candidacy.
Now neither one of them can get there.
The thing I am determined to focus on now, is beating Obama any way possible. Then we can sort out the details with whom ever is charged with that task. If that nominee is Romney, then we literally camp out on his doorstep and force him to make all of his promises to govern like a Conservative, a reality.
Then, we work feverishly the next 4 years, replacing the GOPE. But the first task, is to STOP THE BLEEDING! (Or the patient will die.)
Dr. Dobson in Colorado?
Are you speakin of the Dr. Dobson, who said that Newt can't be allowed to win because we can't have an adultress as a first lady? That Dr. Dobson...
He needs to resign. If Callista Gingrich is still to be considered an adultress, based on past behavior and sins, which he has repented of, and which there is no evidence of in her present life, then Karen Santorum is still a whore fornicating with an abortionist outside the vows of marriage. You can't have it both ways.
This is the Sanctimonium Standard that bewitched the evangelicals - they think they have a principled christian man because he judges everyone else's sin and seems to be sin free. If that is his standard, that Newt's wife is still an adultress, and should be called on, then Karen is still as bad or worse. That's their standard, let them live and die by it, and they will, because we are all sinners and have come short of the glory of God.
As we saw happen in Ohio, Michigan, Wyoming and Alaska, where Newt split the conservative vote permitting Romney to come up the middle.
Bahahaha! Ricktards still repeating drivel. Santorum lost Ohio and Michigan because he couldn’t keep his foot out of his mouth, and squandered BIG leads in both (plus he couldn’t get enough liberal Democrats to vote for him). Period.
Then you ought to have no problem dismantling my arguments sport. :)
So the fact that Newt’s tally was greater than the margin had nothing to do with the fact that Romney was able to come up the middle and win?
I strongly suspect that had it been Newt in second that the first thing you’d be arguing is that Santorum had to get out of the race rather then hurting conservatives? Oh wait, that’s what you’re arguing despite the fact that Santorum is beating Newt. The tail continues to wag the dog.
I was waiting for the Newt folks to acknowledge this the first time that it did happen, but *crickets*. Some were honest enough, and the pattern is now established.
Take a purple state. Santorum + Newt > Romney. Santorum - Newt < Romney. Romney wins. How many times do we have to watch this repeat before folks finally start seeing what’s happening here?
Newt is delivering the states that Romney will need to win, right in his lap. And best of all, he goes into debt doing so. Can’t Newt see this, that he’s hurting himself, he’s hurting his team and he’s putting Romney in the nomination?
I will say it once more clearly - so perhaps even you can understand - I don’t have the time to waste - in other words, my time is precious to me - I spend it wisely and where there is fertile ground for open honest discussion. You are a human meme.
Ignore List, YOU.
Post of the year right there.
All you have listed so far are a bunch of projections and hypotheticals. The results of everything you are trying so hard to rewrite, are already a hard reality. Santorum cannot win, and should not win, because he is one of the poorest candidates that have ever run for the nomination.
Santorum’s political career will be over after this primary is finished. Newt's is really just getting warmed up and he will have much to contribute in the coming years ahead. And we desperately need his input and assistance.
Santorum on the other hand, can go back to being a Big Union lobbyist, which is what he does best.
Funny, until Roe v. Wade, abortion was controlled by the states.
Ma’am, you chose to reply to me, not the other way around.
I could care less if Santorum stays in. He is completely irrelevant as he could never be elected to anything beyond local office. Newt is focused on furthering conservative ideas, and holding Republicans’ feet to the fire. Something I would never trust Santorum to do. Romney already has the nomination. Santorum never ever had any chance of being the nominee. Wake up. Move on.
JCB asked, just name even one state Santorum caused Newt to lose.
So I named two. It wont wash to say, oh, I meant name a state Santorum caused Newt to lose to ROMNEY.

A very wise freeper had this to say about what you are stating. Both of your posts together form a great primer on how the evangelicals have pulled this crap 2 cycles in a row now. they gave us obama, they will give us romney, if we don't fight like the country's survival depends on us..
"Its Huckabee bullheadedly plowing ahead of Thompson by sheer belief in his own holiness all over again. The story always starts out the same: Conservatives get a credible alternative to the Establishment front-runner, and he starts getting attacked.
Then the SoCon who stayed under the radar (Huckabee then, Santorum now) becomes everyones plan B, because the guy who could have won (Thompson, Gingrich) was unloaded upon by the GOP-E money machine. Then the smug supporters of the upstart underdog all thump their chest and say NO.....YOUR GUY SHOULD DROP OUT!!
Then the vote is already split, the credible candidate becomes non-credible because of vote-splitting, and the upstart winds-up in second place because folks trying to beat the Establishment liberal switch to plan B because the smug voters of the only holy candidate make it loudly clear that theyre going to support the holy upstart candidate even if it means the Liberals win. It JUST KEEPS HAPPENING.
In reality, what needed to happen was for Santorum to drop out early, when it became apparent that there was someone who could lead Romney in the polls for a long time, and when it was clear he had a friggin LITANY of ballot and delegate issues. Even if it was not Newt at the time (heck, replace Newt with Perry), Conservatives should have united around a single candidate with a full organization and little to no ballot and delegate issues, and there SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A PLAN B. Conservative should have been forced to STAY united, learn to DEFEND their candidate rather than defect because the rich, Establishment Liberal was able to smear the credible Conservative with overwhelming cash.
If there had been no Santorum, Newt would be leading right now. He would be leading because we would have been united against Romney from day one, and there would have been no defections based on the fact that - by simply running under the radar - someone else rises because they havent been unloaded on.
We CANNOT keep doing this. We CANNOT keep Santoruming and Huckabeeing ourselves based on some sick notion of the holiness of a politician. We cannot keep some broke one-percenter in the race because they were able to show well in Iowa after living there for two years and facing almost no attacks because of their low polling. We cannot keep rewarding these guys for throwing Hail Mary passes when we have a chance to defeat the Liberals. No more shoestring campaigns, no more one-percenters who surge in time to do well in Iowa, no more long-shot dreams based on the notion that some candidate is the mostest Christianest candidate of them all.
No more Huckabees, no more Santorums. No more long-shots who surge in Iowa. Rule them out before they ruin another Primary season. Santorum was never going to get 1144 delegates - it was NEVER going to happen. The fact that people bull-headedly refused to waver from him KILLED us - and then they turned around and taunted Newt and Perry voters for voting for Santorum in desperation, citing the vote count as if nobody knows what was actually happening. No more Santorums, no more Huckabees. No more long shots, period." ~ TitansAFC

Santorum’s won 10 states already. Only Romney and Reagan have won more and failed to win their respective nominations.
He still has quite a few more states left to go.
If he’s one of the poorest candidates to ever stand for the republican nomination, the results and the balloting sure suggest otherwise.
And the fact that he beat Gingrich, despite being the ‘weakest nominee candidate in GOP history?’ What does that say about Newt, if we were to accept your premise?
Then step aside and let the conservatives who want to defeat Romney come in.
We need conservatives who are willing to fight, not conservatives looking for an excuse to quit. I’m sorry that Newt didn’t have what it takes, and that’s hard to accept. Hey, I’ve been there.
But this nomination isn’t yet over even if Newt is done. Like I said earlier, we need all the fighters we can get.
