Witness intimidation is a regular factor in the “hood”. There's always a chance the other gang members will retaliate. What the media has been providing is another reason not to cooperate with law enforcement and, by locating and publicizing the names of witnesses, they're acting as thug enablers.

In my neighborhood, Hispanic kids with knife wounds show up at the hospital ER almost every weekend. Sometimes, their friends just dump them in the parking lot and leave. They very rarely “know” who stabbed them, or why, and getting the right identity for them is always problematic. When they die, though, there's no shortage of family members claiming little Juan was a good boy who never had any involvement with gangs.
