As a former resident of this city, I beleive this proves that even a newspaper in a conservative area can be liberal.

I will go further, and assert that there is no such thing as conservative journalism. Not, that is, anything which the membership of the Associated Press would recognize as “journalism.”

The AP definition of journalism requires recognition of AP journalism as “objective.” AP journalism claims objectivity, but self=claimed objectivity is intrinsically oxymoronic. If you are actually trying to be objective, you discipline yourself to be open to a critique of any possible interest you may have in the subject you are trying to be objective about. Taking your own objectivity for granted is the opposite of doing so, and as such it is the very definition of subjectivity.

Claiming objectivity is IMHO close to perfectly analogous to claiming wisdom. The Sophists of ancient Greece claimed wisdom, and became notorious for their sophistry (and the origin of the very word itself). The classical method of rebutting the sophists is to reject any claim of possession of wisdom, and to claim only to love wisdom - thereby drawing the discussion away from credentialism and focusing it on the facts and logic relevant to the issue at hand. The approach of the “lover of wisdom” - “philosopher” in Greek - is the only approach which has any chance of success standing against our modern “objective” journalism. If you insist on facts and logic you are pretty certain to be labeled a “conservative” in America today.
