As with any population of such a size, there is great variation among blacks in every human trait (except, obviously, the trait of identifying oneself as black). They come fat, thin, tall, short, dumb, smart, introverted, extroverted, honest, crooked, athletic, sedentary, fastidious, sloppy, amiable, and obnoxious. There are black geniuses and black morons. There are black saints and black psychopaths.
However, if you believe in playing the odds - and many mathematicians do - then his advice is worth following. Mostly. I don’t believe in making friends based on what they can or cannot do for your career.
He probably should have added that much of what he wrote applies primarily to black youths, around 15-30.
Then he spent the rest of the column focussing on blacks in a negative light. It was one long string of BS that in no way reflects the conservative value of respecting individuals and judging people as individuals, not as a stereotypical member of some group. One thing is certain: if Louis Farrakhan had written a similar article, no one here would be defending it.
