This is a rather problematic strategy, but if he wants to make this his fight, then by all means, let him give it a shot....
The tenure and authority of the Chief Justice transcends that of ANY President, and particularly one who has challenged the Supreme Court directly.
The history of FDR, the National Recovery Act, and the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Charles E. Hughes should provide a cautionary tale for the indolent, insolent Obama regime.
But of course, that probably does not mean a thing to the Current Occupant.
I think he intends to say he needs to be re-elected to appoint “moderate” judges instead of more nasty conservatives.
Same argument Republicans are using just upside down.
Is he trying Chicago tactics on the Supremes - hoping one or two will retire and give him another shot at loading the Court with more liberals??
FDR was faced with a unanimous court in Shechter vs US which gave him a real uphill struggle on stacking the court, a move too destructive of the Constitution for most Americans at that time even with FDR’s popularity. We dodged the socialist bullet then but still lost ground in the long run.
Now Obama has four firm votes for his Marxist agenda and only needs one more. Running against the court is easier when you can point to angry dissenting opinions from the fab four. Even Kennedy is fond of interpreting laws using foreign precedent.
Obama needs a better economy or the appearance of such. The MSM will paint a picture of health care disasters if the mandate is overturned. The NYT has already begun, providing talking points for our political pundits.
