“I still think that Lee was one of the best generals in Western history...”
I couldn't agree more. Lee was a brilliant star 15 years before the Civil War in the Mexican-American War (1846) with innovation, competence and personal bravery. Grant was in the thick of things but didn't rise up to the star level. Another notable battle field leader in the first half of the war was Jefferson Davis.
Remember, The Army of the Potomac went through 7 generals before ending up with Grant. The Army of Northern Virginia had one general under the command of Robert E Lee. The Army of Northern Virginia was divided into three districts: Aquia District,Potomac District and Valley District. The first commander of the Army of Northern Virginia was General P.G.T. Beauregard from June 20 to July 20, 1861.
