I don't consume any "-ose" (glucose, frucyose, etc, including "sugar") unless it is in a whole fruit. For example: no orange juice.

I also want to keep an unfettered right to consume any "-ose" that I wish. I do not want the government telling me what to eat and what not to eat.

The Internet now offers fast and easy access to information about all substances. There is little utility in the government trying to educate us, much less dictate nutrition. A six-year-old can quickly inform herself about the dangers of sugar.

We are not consuming large amounts of sugar.... We are consuming large amounts of corn syrup. If you check packages that you buy, corn syrup is in everything. We did not have an obese or diabetic problem until they switched over to cheaper corn syrup rather than cane sugar.

I hear you Viking! Don’t know what 50 is like yet but I went from a collegiate XC runner to a 36 YO that still thinks he is that young man about once a month. It’s harder to maintain physically every year since 30. Had to quit drinking beer (in excess) a couple years ago b/c it was causing heartburn. Friends said I should take pills for it. No way. I’ll listen to my body and quit the behavior that is clearly messing me up. So now it’s all clear booze that is easier to metabolize... for me anyway. Vodka and gin.

In moderation of course.

Why is it always that the government wants to step in with their usual one-size-fits-all approach? Stupid question. B/c we can’t take care of ourselves. How foolish of me.

The issue for conservatives about sugar is not whether the science tells us that it is harmful in the degree described, the issue for us as conservatives is the same as it is for global warming, evolution, string theory, etc.

In other words, conservatism has no opinion on the validity of science but it does have a very practical principle to apply to what we learned from science. I do not know whether sugar is as harmful as they say, although I believe that it is. However, my opinion in determining scientific validity is of no worth whatsoever but my opinion as a citizen demanding the freedom to enjoy sugar or abstain from it as I please is inviolate under conservatism.

I think the same should apply to tobacco and alcohol which have been mentioned on these threads and I even think it should even apply to drugs. We tried it the other way with alcohol but failed to learn completely a very obvious lesson.

Even without the harmful implications from the ingestion of sugar, I oppose sugar subsidies just as I oppose ethanol.

Unless you actually take on the attributes of the Twinkies.

The reason why Twinkies are bad for you is because they don't have any chocolate in them.

If you have to have a twinkie, then you need to offset the bad effects by washing it down with a cold glass of chocolate milk.

I feel the same way Nathan. I don’t smoke, don’t like it but will defend it. If not the they will come for my golf clubs next because 5 hours in the sun can’t be good for anyone.

Too many judges golf, bad example. Booze and golf will always be around bc of judges. But you know what I mean.

I scan the ingredients of everyhing I buy.

If I find something contains sugar or sugar in any of its guises (e.g., cane juice, tahini, corn syrup, etc.) I put the item back on the shelf.

They put that crap in almost everything!

I agree. I avoid corn syrup items as much as possible. I enjoy drinking coca-cola, but only buy the Mexican variety that is made with cane sugar. Other countries aren't as stupid as ours when it comes to shoveling artificial crap into our food.

— Junk Food Junkie (Larry Groce) -—

You know I love that organic cooking
I always ask for more
And they call me Mr Natural
On down to the health food store
I only eat good sea salt
White sugar don’t touch my lips
And my friends is always begging me
To take them on macrobiotic trips
Yes, they are
Oh, but at night I stake out my strong box
That I keep under lock and key
And I take it off to my closet
Where nobody else can see
I open that door so slowly
Take a peek up north and south
Then I pull out a Hostess Twinkie
And I pop it in my mouth
Yeah, in the daytime I’m Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I’m a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me
Well, at lunchtime you can always find me
At the Whole Earth Vitamin Bar
Just sucking on my plain white yogurt
From my hand thrown pottery jar
And sippin’ a little hand pressed cider
With a carrot stick for dessert
And wiping my face in a natural way
On the sleeve of my peasant shirt
Oh, yeah
Ah, but when that clock strikes midnight
And I’m all by myself
I work that combination on my secret hideaway shelf
And I pull out some Fritos corn chips
Dr Pepper and an ole Moon Pie
Then I sit back in glorious expectation
Of a genuine junk food high
Oh yeah, in the daytime I’m Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
Oh, but at night I’m a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me
My friends down at the commune
They think I’m pretty neat
Oh, I don’t know nothing about arts and crafts
But I give ‘em all something to eat
I’m a friend to old Euell Gibbons
And I only eat home grown spice
I got a John Keats autographed Grecian urn
Filled up with my brown rice
Yes, I do
Oh, folks but lately I hae been spotted
With a Big Mac on my breath
Stumbling into a Colonel Sanders
With a face as white as death
I’m aftraid someday they’ll find me
Just stretched out on my bed
With a handful of Pringles potato chips
And a Ding Dong by my head
In the daytime I’m Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I’m a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me

I don’t think Whitney Houston died of a sugar overdose.

Couple of things they may have omitted. Sugar is bad, but it isn’t the main problem. The main problem is fructose. Glucose converts in an entirely different way from fructose.

Sugar is more expensive than High Fructose Corn Syrup. So HFCS is used in many processed foods instead of sugar. It is also used in low fat foods to enhance taste. Fructose converts at the cellular level in a different way from other sugars.

We eat way too much sugar, I have recently cut sugar out not entirely but I have stopped putting it in coffee etc. But we also get tons of HFCS without even knowing. It is in all kinds of processed foods. To the extent we eat sugar, we should try to eat fiber at the same time. Add fiber tablets or add Metamucil a couple times a day if possible. Fiber has been stripped from much of our processed foods because Fiber takes longer to cook, spoils easily, and makes food hard to store and ship around the world. But if you look in nature, everywhere there is sugar, it comes with fiber. Even sugar cane is mostly fiber. Fruits have lots of fiber with the sugar. So if you eat sugar, eat fiber.

There is a great 1 hour video online that explains all this. Best to avoid as much sugar as possible but to the extent sugar is eaten, add fiber and add water if you can.

This video, about 1 hour, is a great explanation of how it all works in the body.

There is very solid research to suggest Fructose is toxic at any dose. While it won’t kill you directly it probably will indirectly if you eat enough. And surely eating a fair amount of fruits and vegetables is a net positive, because when you eat the fruits and vegetables you get fiber, which is an antidote to the negative effects of sugar. See the link in my post above if you have the time to watch the video. It’s a very convincing case from a very well credentialed researcher.
