How California's Colleges Indoctrinate Students
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 30, 2012 | PETER BERKOWITZ

Posted on 04/01/2012 6:58:13 PM PDT by reaganaut1

The politicization of higher education by activist professors and compliant university administrators deprives students of the opportunity to acquire knowledge and refine their minds. It also erodes the nation's civic cohesion and its ability to preserve the institutions that undergird democracy in America.

So argues "A Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California," a new report by the California Association of Scholars, a division of the National Association of Scholars (NAS). The report is addressed to the Regents of the University of California, which has ultimate responsibility for governing the UC system, but the pathologies it diagnoses prevail throughout the country.

The analysis begins from a nonpolitical fact: Numerous studies of both the UC system and of higher education nationwide demonstrate that students who graduate from college are increasingly ignorant of history and literature. They are unfamiliar with the principles of American constitutional government. And they are bereft of the skills necessary to comprehend serious books and effectively marshal evidence and argument in written work.

This decline in the quality of education coincides with a profound transformation of the college curriculum. None of the nine general campuses in the UC system requires students to study the history and institutions of the United States. None requires students to study Western civilization, and on seven of the nine UC campuses, including Berkeley, a survey course in Western civilization is not even offered. In several English departments one can graduate without taking a course in Shakespeare. In many political science departments majors need not take a course in American politics.

Moreover, the evidence suggests that the hollowing of the curriculum stems from too many professors' preference for promoting a partisan political agenda.

College educators promoting a liberal political agenda, rather than doing their jobs?

Wow.

They’re just now noticing?

Yep, it's the end result of free government indoctrination, aka education.

I cannot access the whole article without subscribing.

I wonder if the courses discussed are crucial, only because the authors of the report deemed them crucial? Isn’t it possible to learn critical thinking skills in any course of study?

Seeing the amount of scientific illiteracy throughout society, and having a good understanding of how it hurts and kills people, I’d argue that all college students should have to take more than just the basic “biology for humanities majors” type of course that is, too often, the only science requirement.

OTOH, I see a course in Western Civilization as being exceedingly vague, and can picture a course with such a title being a vehicle for espousing all kinds of kooky ideas (like socialism).

Although a Berkeley alumnus, I was in the sciences as a graduate student and I never heard or saw any professor trying to politically indoctrinate students.

That was back in the 60's-70's when radicalism was establishing a foothold in the body politic.

Then, Liberalism and Communism were disdained by the radicals.

The enemy was...the establishment, and especially the Federal government was viewed as a sinister force.

The sin of un-Political Correctness had not been invented.

My point: This is a new phenomenon, unrelated to the infamous Berkeley 60's era, but rather propelled by Marxist ideologues, like Obama.

I have a history degree from one of California’s
most renown state universities. It used to be that
history was a good major if you wanted to be a
high school teacher. Not anymore. Today they major
in social sciences with a history concentration if
desired. The good history profs dealt in critical
analysis and the poor ones spent their class time
selling left wing garbage. It is not hard to imagine
that there are probably a lot more garbage peddlers
than there was thirty years ago.

Years ago when I was in my last year at Cal Berkeley(I still believe it was and still is one of the greatest for my field of science) I had to take and make a passing grade on a 2hr exam about USA civics and history in order to get my degree. Even then the feely-goodie concept of government deciding social equality was taking root.

That's incomprehensible. When did this happen? It's academic malpractice. I still have my Western Civ book in our bookcase. No American History courses? You can major in English and not take Shakespeare? I remember taking "Major British Writers." Do they offer that anymore? And these "studies" departments. . .

Same here. Submitting a master thesis was not enough for my university. My graduation also relied on passing an idiotic, waste of time, civics class which had no relation to my degree and the professor was a known liberal. Had to be creative and think like a liberal (which means going brain-dead) when I submitted my term paper.

Amy Bishop
http://www.newsrealblog.com/2011/01/23/the-top-7-violent-left-wingers-youre-not-supposed-to-remember/3/
On February 12, 2010, University of Alabama Professor Amy Bishop opened fire during a biology department meeting, killing three of her colleagues and injuring three more. As Michelle Malkin has documented, Bishop had an assault record, and students and professors had raised concerns about her mental state. She also may have murdered her brother in 1986.
A far-right professor? Nope—her political views were reportedly in line with the average academic. On February 15, the Boston Herald reported that a “family source” described Bishop as “a far left political activist who was ‘obsessed’ with President Obama to the point of being off putting.” On RateMyProfessors.com, students described her as a “liberal” and a “socialist” in a comment that has apparently been since removed.
Granted, Bishop was apparently motivated by fear of losing her job, not politics, but if we’re going by the rationale put forth by Paul Krugman and company, who’s to say the “culture of hostility” her fellow travelers fostered had nothing to do with her seeing “Second Amendment solutions” as a legitimate way to solve her problems?

A frequent lecturer at several New York City universities
About World War II: “Britain and the United States opposed fascism only because it threatened their own control over resources and people. …How could one reconcile the United States fighting in World War II for the rights of nations to independence and self determination, with its history of expansion, its 100-year war against native Indians driving them off their ancestral lands, its 250 years of enslavement of Africans, it’s war with Mexico, and taking almost half their lands and sending marines almost 20 times into the countries of the Caribbean? Seizing Hawaii and fighting a brutal war to subjugate the Philippines. And sending of 5,000 marines into Nicaragua in 1929. This nation could hardly claim to believe in the rights of self determination. Neither the invasion of Austria, nor Czechoslovakia nor Poland, brought the United States into armed conflict with fascism. We went to war only when our processions in Hawaii were attacked and when our navy was disabled by Japanese bombs.”

In 1992 Butts, angry over the fact that blacks patronized Korean businesses that allegedly disrespected black customers, called for “massive civil disobedience” that would “disrupt business as usual.”
Butts called for a consumer boycott of white businesses.
Butts hosted Fidel Castro at the Abyssinian Baptist Church. There, in front of a crowd of 1,300, including several local Democratic office holders such as Charles Rangel, Jose Serrano, and Nydia Velazquez, Butts lavished praise on the honored guest. “It is in our tradition to welcome all who are visionaries, revolutionaries and who seek the liberation of all people”.

“[D]o not take this class if you are patriotic. [D]o not take it if you have any common sense.”

“This lady hates America! All she talks about is how America has ravaged the world. She blames the U.S. for everything from the [C]old [W]ar to some poor guy who slipped on a banana peel. Her class is nothing but a bash-America session. If you like America, steer clear from this lady!”
