What if Trayvon Martin had killed George Zimmerman?

“Obama Campaign: Republicans ‘Politicizing’ Trayvon Martin's Death,” RealClearPolitics reported yesterday, citing an appearance on MSNBC by Stephanie Cutter, Obama's Deputy Campaign Manager.

She was referencing the reaction to the president saying if he had a son he would look like Trayvon.

"His Republican opponents have jumped all over him because they do want to play politics with this issue. The President spoke from his heart on this, it was trying to emphasize with some parents who had just lost a child. By any measure, this was a tragedy and we need to let the investigation take its course," Cutter said.

Amen to the latter part—the investigation should be allowed to take its course. But as for “people hav[ing] to stop politicizing it,” Ms. Cutter exhibited bizarre, in-your-face hypocrisy, particularly considering some of the recent performances by Democrats Maxine Waters, Chuck Schumer, Hank Johnson, Bobby Rush…

The political left that includes the Sharpton/Jackson self-promotion street theater to the positively loony and dangerous haters represented by the New Black Panthers, has been doing nothing but making hay of this tragedy for political gain while pouring gasoline on the flames of racial mistrust,

I then asked a question that I believe merits a fair discussion:

Assuming he was not the aggressor, what if Martin had stood his ground and managed to kill Zimmerman? Would not those rallying behind his memory want to use the law to rally to his defense?

Ah, but there’s the rub, some may say. Reports say Martin punched first, and was on top of Zimmerman pummeling him.

We may never know, but in principle we need to be able to ask what if Trayvon Martin had killed George Zimmerman? Or what if their ethnicities had been reversed? What discussion would we…should we be having then?

There are like 8 phone calls. 6 of them are 911 calls to police either during or after the fight and shooting. In one of those 911 calls, you can hear the screaming and a gunshot.

In the call Zimmerman made to police, the call ends before Martin and Zimmerman obtain face to face contact.

The call that Trayvon's girlfriend had with Trayvon is not recorded. All we have is her word, through counsel, of what was said during that call. She says that call terminates at the moment the fight began. She attributes start of the fight to a shove from Zimmerman, but that's speculation on her part, and the verbal exchange she describes is equivocal. In other words, she doesn't have Zimmerman saying anything particularly nasty.

I think the responsible person is named Bondi. She may have new interviews with the witnesses, rather than rely on existing interviews. Probably a good thing, as review of past interviews usually raises questions and desires for clarification and so forth.

Some people think she'll pull a Nifong. She might. I've watched enough events unfold in high stakes legal matters to know that the players are willing to toss the law aside to achieve some ultimate outcome; all while muttering legal mumbo jumbo.

Or if the cops got there and broke up the fight, Trayvon would be juvi-charged with assault or aggravated assault (also not newsworthy).

Zimmerman said something about Martin looking like he was on drugs, acting strange.

Was he on Skittles, the street name for Ecstasy, I believe, or Skittles the candy?

Is he on tape at the store, actually buying Skittles the candy and Arizona

Former co-workers describe Zimmerman as a “Jekyll and Hyde".

The mother of the 13-year-old witness claims that he was pressured by the police to taylor what he saw.

Two other witnesses don't believe that Zimmerman was acting in self-defense.

Trayvon’s girlfriend recounts the final moments of her conversation with him before the line went dead.

There are no known cases of violence by Martin but there are several known cases of violence by Zimmerman (as an adult). It is also known, via Zimmerman's call, that Zimmerman followed Martin but that Martin avoided a confrontation by running. Nobody here has any genuine knowledge about what happened after that call and before the 911 calls that reported the fight already in progress.

How did Martin and Zimmerman come in contact with each other after Martin avoided a confrontation by running? Zimmerman's version is that Martin returned and confronted him, which fits with the known facts. Is your version that Zimmerman went looking for Martin, found him, and caught up to him? Even though Martin had a running head start?

I don’t know, I wasn’t there.

I’ve been told by FReepers that Martin stopped running, that he was ‘lurking’ by an apartment. Possibly he was seeking shelter from a sudden downpour under a covered porch until the rain let up and Zimmerman saw him.

The weather here in Florida is strange ... we’ll have a 10-minute monsoon and then its gone ... and 10 miles away won’t see a drop of rain.

Don’t you find Zimmerman’s version of the events a bit self-serving.

It was already raining when Martin was strolling around looking at the houses.

Zimmerman’s story checks out on every level. There are witnesses, 911 calls, video, all consistent with Zimmerman’s version of events. If you’re going to keep shilling for the thug, you need to come up with a story that fits the evidence. Zimmerman came up with his story before the evidence was in, yet coincidentally it just happens to fit. If he could come up with a plausible story with no notice, Martin’s camp should have been able to come up with one by now.
