L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa calls for layoffs of city workers

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said today he will call for layoffs of city workers as part of his budget to be released next month.

"We're going to lay off a large number of employees. I'm not going to say how many," Villaraigosa said during a speech to the City Administrative Officer Investors Conference at the Grammy Museum today.

The city's employee negotiating committee, which includes Villaraigosa and several City Council members, recently asked thousands of city workers to put off raises until the city's budget improves.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana said this week the city's budget deficit for the next fiscal year is close to $220 million.

The budget, which comes out April 20, also will call for the city to lease its parking garages, Villaraigosa told the audience. City Council members previously rejected plans to privatize city parking lots.

The mayor said he will push to raise the retirement age for city workers to 67, vowing to put it before voters if not approved by the City Council.

The City Council Budget and Finance Committee is expected to hold extensive hearings to discuss the mayor's proposed budget after it is released.

The city charter requires the City Council to amend or approve the mayor's budget by June 1.

I believe it when I see it. The proposal still has to go through the LA City Council.

The city's employee negotiating committee... recently asked thousands of city workers to put off raises until the city's budget improves.

Bernanke is busy trying to prop-up property and stock markets, but in spite of that, they are going to have to wait a LONG time.

They’ll start with the people who are only weeks from retirement.

Shut down the entire corrupt city government, fire them all, and start over with just a few people who have enough common sense to balance simple budgets and have the balls to denounce government unionized employees and their corrupt evil organizations. And get rid of all the bull shit socialist programs and start deporting illegal aliens..Tell these SOB's no more money, no more freebies, no more healthcare, no more food stamps.

This should not be complex or mysterious.

The socialists ran out of other people’s money long, long ago. Now, finally, they have run out of other people’s grandchildren’s money, too. What to do, oh what to do. One thing’s for sure - - I’ve gone Galt, hunkered down and ready for anything. Screw the scum who elect Democrats - - let them eat each other now.

Today there have been stories on Detroit, Portugal, and Spain not being able to pay their bills. Now L.A.

The longer fuel prices hover around $4.00 per gallon, the more people, as well as governmental entities, will be unable to pay bills. The vacation seson will likely be a bust, hurting lots of businesses.

We could have riots about like 1968 this summer.

Don’t bet on it. They shot their socialist wad and have taxed themselves terminal. The son of bitches are broke, most of the people there are broke, and it will get worse.

This is a good thing.

He can desire all the attention he wants, but it don’t change the financial facts.

He would probably ask the utilities commission to raise the rates like they have done in the past.

He might, but the city won't.

We're going to lay off a large number of employees. I'm not going to say how many

Ya see they're quickly reaching the point, where their is no choice, no money, with tax revenues way down and unionized government employee mobs gang raping the tax payers...Well it's coming. Bet the rent.

His city is broke and the layoff notices go out right before Obama’s DNC convention. Perfect.
