livius: Maybe colored was the offensive term. But one never knows what is the non-offensive term. Sometimes its black, sometimes African American, sometimes who knows what it is. Colored was actually a polite term in its day.Cyber Liberty: Maybe we can ring up the NAACP and ask?
I believe it was Jesse Jackson who PUSHed the idea of using the term "African-American" into usage, replacing "Afro American" which had earlier replaced "colored". It was added to the lexicon of PC journalists in the early '80s (I think) and eventually went mainstream.
I don't know why they didn't change the NAACP's name accordingly. Perhaps because it would be NAAAA. ;-)
The "United Negro College Fund" is an anachronism today but I actually saw a television ad for it only a few months ago.

(So there.)

I believe that is incorrect. White is the combination of colors. Black is the absence of color(s). It depends on the situation and whether you're talking about light or pigment.

I don't think
colored (the word in question) is an offensive term. It is certainly better than black which has negative connotations and African American, which is just plain ridiculous.
I also think the cartoon is kind of funny.
It is only the much maligned John Birch Society that has the sense not to use a term such as black and use a less derogatory term such as negro.
Negro and colored don't have the negative connotations that a term such as black has; e.g., black heart, Black Plague; etc.

“I wish the US would get over its racial obsession.”
Well, 12% of the US population needs to get over its racial obsession, anyway.

I believe you have it backwards, black is the combination of all colors, white (true pure white is the absence of any pigment or color). I could be completely out of my tree though, but I seem to remember a simple science experiment in junior high where we used black ink and drew (bled) all of the colors of the rainbow out of it anyhow.

I can’t do that. I filled out the last 2 censi 2000 and 2010 that I am hispanic. Prove Im not lol. i have been a white hispanic for a dozen years now. I understand the need for the government to enumerate the population. But knowing my race is unnessecary unless they need it for their Keynsean economics....
