Wasn’t Zimmerman WARNED not to follow Martin by the police dispatcher?
No, he was told, “You don’t need to do that [follow him].”
Why did Zimmerman choose not to take that advice?
Why does it matter?

Actually if you listen to the 911 tape you can hear the wind as if Zimmerman was running. When the dispatcher tells him he doesn’t need him to follow, the wind stops. Zimmerman returned to his truck and Martin confronted him there.

Zimmerman was not a policeman. He had no authority to exit his vehicle and confront ANYBODY. If someone confronted you on a dark and rainy night after following you what would you do? It can be argued that Martin was defending himself after Zimmerman tried to play cop.
