In Arlington, Jeb Bush says ‘stand your ground’ invalid in Trayvon Martin case

ARLINGTON -- Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Friday that the “stand your ground” self-defense law he signed while in office should not apply to the case of a teenager who was shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in his home state.

“This law does not apply to this particular circumstance,” Bush said after an education panel discussion at the University of Texas at Arlington. “Stand your ground means stand your ground. It’s doesn’t mean chase after somebody who’s turned their back.”

He was referring to reports that the 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin, was pursued by the volunteer and fatally shot in a scuffle.

“Anytime an innocent life is taken it's a tragedy,” Bush said. “You've got to let the process work."

This whole thing is bound to turn into a Rodney King scenario. The mob and the media have already tried and convicted Zimmerman without full knowledge of the police reports, and more importantly, something no one has seen, which is the in station interview.
Mark my words. Should this whole thing turn out to be a horrible situation gone bad, with no charging or conviction of Zimmerman, there will be riots that will make the Rodney King affair look like a Sunday school picnic.

I understand what the left is trying to do with this case.

However, it’s just my guess that this risks getting seriously out of control. And the more this bizarre little case involving an hispanic and a black spins out of control, the more it is going to terrify whites and very possibly hispanics.

A racial incident is the last thing Obama needed, and his statement that his non existent son would “look like” the black participant is sure to offend one group or another. Americans do not want Obama to be a racial president and they do not want Obama to preside over racial troubles. They thought he was going to prevent all that.

We are a nation of laws, not rule by mob!!! Evidently the Sanford police did not feel the arrest and murder charge was not the proper, lawful action to take, and, as such, Mr. Zimmerman was neither charged with murder or arrested at the crime scene. Time and investigation will reveal the facts of this tragic case. The Black racists, including the POTUS Obama should have let the law and process work its willbefore going into ovedrive Black racist rants and spewing hate. that race gig ain’t gonna work no more. Obama was a fool to enter into the fray, and he will come to regret it!!!

In the end, justice will prevail. Either Mr. Zimmerman will be proved guilty of murder, by a jury of his peers, or he will be proven innocent, defending himself from bodily harm and attack!!! For Obama, Sharpton, Farrakhan, etc. to rabble rouse, when hard facts are unknown, serves no useful purpose other then to provoke racial tensions, which America has simply had enough of!!!

And, you can bet those riots will be in mid-to-late October.

“Never fail to take advantage of a good crisis. . .” Seems we’ve heard that before. . .

The fix is in... I guess we’ll just drag Zimmerman out and hang him high.

You know what I am tired of? People jumping all over Zimmerman because he didn’t obey the police dispatcher when she told him to stay in his vehicle.

The police default to “Let us handle it, you are not qualified nor able to handle this situation.”

That is INFURIATING to me. Calling 911 only expedites the police investigation AFTER the crime has been committed. Zimmer KNEW that the suspect would be long gone before the police showed up.

Thsi case is very murky. It will be interesting to see how Zimmerman got the bloody head wound and he grass on his back.

Thanks for that!

I heard the 911 short version on Hannity's radio, then heard later Hugh Hewitt claiming the guy is guilty of stalking and murder.

I'm not sure how you do neighborhood watch without potentially following a suspect, must be Hugh's lawyer speak. Seems to me the fact of who called 911 aligns well with why the police didn't make an arrest.

The reason for my interest is flame fanning 101. Or did all this start because Jeniffer Granholm donned a hoodie in support?

I do think this is a strategy waiting for an event ala Rodney King but they may have picked the wrong event.

This is not urban LA or Detroit.

clearly he should have; and probably was trained to.

I haven't heard a single detail about this story besides this. The kid was carrying a gun? He went after someone? He was told by a police dispatcher to sit tight? That stinks. Really stinks.

What’s the difference between Jeb prejudging this and Obammy prejudging the incident with the professor?

Absolutely nothing.

Equality of Ignorance.

Of course we are going to leave out the part that Trayvon was a 6’2” football player who knocked the smaller Zimmerman to the ground, was beating him and had Zimmerman screaming for help. That Zimmerman was bleeding from both his face and the back of his head, and that he had grass stains on the back of his shirt when the police rolled up.

Jeb Bush should really not make any comments on this situation. Unbelievable, proves that he, like so many others, are being emotional only. The Governor of Florida has already appointed a task force to be led by his Lt. Governor Carroll to hold hearings about the shooting and to make recommendations for changing state laws and procedures. What the heck are they doing this for-this is giving in to the protesters here in Florida about the shooting. They are suppose to be standing on he side of the rights of a citizen, the current law and for the local law enforcing it’s own jurisdiction.

What does Al Shapron and the others like him, know about Florida laws? People should wait to see all of the facts. Ok, the man may have went over board with his policing of the neighborhood and that needs to be investigated. There are reports of GZ being beat. the are reports that the kid was chased down- Get the facts from he investigation, can we? Jeb Bush is wrong and should stay out of this. GZ has his rights- let the facts come out not the things we are reading in the news. If the man is guilty the investigation will show that.

The White House said days ago it was a local matter-now, look what they are doing-DOJ FBI FDLE-State attorney investigators, A special prosecutor from the governor’s office- IF the Man is Innocent he will be Railroaded, my guess. I have to wait to know more. But these people are going in the wrong direction. GZ is Black/Latino. The media calling this a hate crime. Look at all of the money being spent and they by pass the local authority when Obama said it was a Local law enforcement matter. Proves all liberals Never will understand how the laws in which we have for our protection, works. It is innocent until proven guilty, okay- Not, let’s go with the public convicting a person. If the man is guilty, the facts will come out.

(This is why people like Santorum, Jeb Bush and others alike need not be in charge-the only one who has made sense was Newt saying let the investigation move forward)

According to the news reports, and 911 tapes, Martin wound up beating Zimmerman fairly badly. That injury to the back of the head is going to be golden for Zimmerman.

That can be shown to be serious physical injury or attempt and that may very well justify the deadly force usage all by it’s self, without any of the other factors such as age, size and athletic capability, as well as the readiness and willingness of others to assist Zimmerman as he repeatedly called for assistance.

What we should remember here too is that some of the 911 callers said this happened in their back yard. Backyard, where no one but you is supposed to be. So, in effect, Martin was trespassing on someone’s property and could have been legitimitally challenged by Zimmerman on what he was doing.

-- Zimmerman might be guilty, but he might also be truly standing his ground. --

A third alternative is that he was acting is pure self defense, not having an opportunity to retreat from Martin.

"Stand your ground" applies when you have a choice between retreat and stand your ground, and choose to stand your ground rather than retreat.

-- I hadn't heard he tried to leave and was assaulted. --

All the evidence [911 calls by him and by others] points to him "losing" Martin in the darkness, then returning to his truck. He was going to wait there until Police arrived.

The media has had this information from the start.
