With his conservative credentials still taking fire over Etch A Sketchgate, Mitt Romney is facing a new potential obstacle to his argument that he is unfailingly a Republican.
A 2002 clip, posted Friday on BuzzFeed, shows then-Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Romney declaring that his only connection to the Republican Party in the state is that Im registered as a Republican.

Not on Drudge! What a shock.
Exactly. If being a Republican is such a dreadful thing in Romney’s eyes, then why doesn’t he become a Democrat?
Does anyone hear Democratic politicians say they are “barely a Democrat”?
THIS, this right here is why no one trusts this guy. We all know he’s not a conservative and it’s why he will be little better than Obama.
How can he run against Obama with the constant barrage of crap like this coming out?
This country is in deep doo doo if he gets the nom because he will surely lose to Obama. Why don’t people see that?
Drudge, National Review, Townhall.com, Fox News, Ann Coulter, etc., etc., are all standing with their fingers in their ears screaming “I can’t hear you”, as day by day the reality of the Romney “conservative” fraud is confirmed by hard facts and statements of Romney’s key campaign members. The self-proclaimed spokespersons of conservatism have invested too much of their own credibility for them to admit that the guy they’re shoving down the throats of conservatives is not the man they claim he is. After Romney proves them to be the useful idiots they have allowed themselves to become, they’ll all proclaim shock that the man could have been so duplicitous. After all, like George Bush Sr., they had read Romney’s lips and wanted to believe his claims of a conservative transformation. These pseudo conservatives fall into one of three categories: Fools. Damned fools. Or deliberate liars.
The Problem as I see it with Romney is that he will be such a mediocre President that even if he does win he will be so middle of the road as to not upset the apple cart that the economy will not bloom and then in 4 years it will assure that the democrats take back power on the whole meme that the economy didnt recover.
Not to mention any GOP president is going to be so damned hated no matter how moderate they are. Mittens will get so damned gun shy that he will be ineffective and the MSM and the Democrat controlled media will smell blood and keep attacking him even as he retreats and this will paralyze him to what needs to be done to restore the economy and defuse all of Obamas horrible regulatory actions.
Newt is going to be hated like hell anyways and HE KNOWS THAT, but he also knows that he will have the people who put him there behind even if the Media doesnt paint it that way every night at 5:00pm.
So therefore, Newt (who thrives on antagonism instead of flinching from it) will take the bold measures to recover the economy despite being thrashed every night on the MSM news channels. In Four years the MSM will be flabbergasted like their were on election night in 1984, because the man on the street will notice the economy improvement.
Mitt is a Flincher, Newt is a Clincher
Definition of a Clincher:
a decisive fact, argument, act, or remark
Definition of a Flincher:
to withdraw or shrink from or as if from pain
We are so SOL if Either Mittens gets in or Barry gets a second term.
Mittens would only slow things down and then in four years the GOP would be blamed so much but with little to show we would still be in an economic malaise the likes of Carters worst dreams. This would GUARANTEE a Democrat Victory over the house the senate and even the presidency in 2016. They would not be pulling any punches as they would run someone that would make Obama look like a middle of the road moderate. Because they know they would have a very good chance of winning. Not to mention the class warfare game that could be played to Bolshevik conclusion during that election if we get Romney and mediocre performance out of him which is very much likely.
Of course Obama winning would be a very much nothing to lose second term that would see him likely either completely destroying the economy so badly that they play the game of Destroy and Support in that they would destroy the economy and then support the people as the great savior thus ensuring either Glorious Revolution or the mass construction project of making millions more so dependent that they will have a permanent grip on power that would only come undone with Blood sweat and tears, but mostly Blood and Tears.
ABO and ABR, because we really need Newt or maybe Santorum if we get desperate, heck I would even take, heaven forbid (I cant believe I am saying this), Ron Paul over Romney for the reasons above.
So I repeat once more: Newt is the Clincher, and Mitt is the Flincher.
Well the Republicans in Massachusetts are RINOs so distancing oneself from them isn’t necessarily bad in and of itself. So here we have one RINO (Romney) distancing himself from other RINOs. yawn
Obama will be the death of the country.
Romney will be the death of the country.
What exactly is your point?
Hank
Watch the clip closely:
Romney was trying to distance himself from the incumbent Republican machine in that election in Massachusetts.
Reagan wasn’t “chummy” with the Republican Party either. He was a loner, guided by strong principles.
Romney may not have as strong principles, but he is an odd loner type who doesn’t hang with the party bosses to curry favor. He got a lot of money, so he doesn’t need the “machine” for money.
So I don’t take this video to mean that Romney is saying “I’m not a Republican” even though on many counts one could say so on his record.
Well, based on that my point is that you’re a moron if you can’t see the difference between those two. Obama has basically run to openly destroy the country we know. You’re arguing that despite Romney campaigning *against* that, he’ll just change and do the exact same thing.
I mean, that’s fine, I guess. It just makes no sense. Just go right on ahead campaigning for Obama. I’m sure your handlers would approve.
So you’re saying you BELIEVE Romney? Just clarifying. Can you tell me WHY you believe him when he says even though he’s appointed leftists in the past, he won’t do so any longer? I’m genuinely curious.
Hank
Looking at your posting history I see you’re very likely a closeted Mythbot. You know you can’t openly campaign for your guy here, so you keep saying things like “people who can’t see the difference between Obama and Mitt are stupid.”
You know what I notice, though? You NEVER give us any evidence in support of the proposition that Romney is any better. Never offer a single way in which your guy Myth is an actual conservative. You criticize Obama...well we all know he’s pure filth, that’s gimme. But you offer nothing by way of evidence supporting your guy.
I wonder why that is?
Never mind. I don’t really.
Hank
You haven’t actually looked at my posting history if that’s what you think. I did not support Romney at any point this cycle and I didn’t support Romney in 2008 until it was between Romney and McCain. If it were between Romney and Paul, I might consider supporting Romney then, but otherwise I do not particularly care for him.
He isn’t “my guy” so I do not have to support him against any other Republican candidate. Romneycare is a serious issue. Romney’s history and his constant “I’m not conservative” moments in the past sure aren’t helpful. You would think this would hurt him against Republican challengers in the primary, but they all have their faults too. They aren’t the same type, mind you, but that combined with the Romney attack machine was enough to win. Romney wins like a Democrat and that sickens me.
The problem is once it’s Obama and Romney, that’s not even a choice. Obama is *awful*. As I said, there couldn’t possibly be a worse President. The worst one could (or should) reasonably expect from Romney is what he did in Massachusetts - not very conservative at all, but certainly a bloody hell of a lot better than Obama. Anybody with a brain who’s put five seconds of thought into this realizes that Romney *has* to be better than Obama, so it follows that anybody who doesn’t see that either isn’t playing with a full deck or is an Obama plant in the first place.
Good day.
Romney sooo reminds me of a cheap trick, wild Bill used car sales guy.
Putta tan plaid polyester suit on this guy with solid white loafers and he'd fit the bill. Just like a freakin used car salesman, they'll tell you anything just to sell.
This is exactly what Romney is doing. Adjust his stand on a variety of issues depending on the audience.
You folks that voted or are bout to vote for Romney will get exactly what you asked for...a weak liberal deceiver.

Gracious Gumbo! Are you out of your mind?
I have read many comments from Freepers saying the exact same thing over the years, distancing themselves from the Republican establishment.
Freepers do it because the party is too liberal, Mitt thinks the party’s too conservative.
I bet you really went out and celebrated Santorum’s Louisana landslide. Not bad for an “absolute waste”.
Obama will be the death of the country.

And so will Romney. Contested convention is our best bet of saving this country.
The problem is too many broken glass republicans keep rolling over while they keep feeding us more and more leftists. It is past time for rebellion.
