No, Senator Santorum, Obama and Romney aren’t the same
Hot Air ^ | March 22, 2012 | Ed Morrissey

As someone who supports Rick Santorum for President, and who will caucus tomorrow in the next phase of Minnesota’s political process as a delegate, I understand the need to replace Barack Obama in 2012 in order to right the American ship of state and address the serious problems that Obama has either created, amplified, or ignored over the last three years. I do, however, wonder whether Senator Santorum understands that need. Yesterday, as Allahpundit noted with excellent analysis, Santorum told a Louisiana audience that if Mitt Romney won the nomination, we’d be better off sticking with what we’ve already got:

“You win by giving people a choice. You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there. If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate of the future,” Santorum told a crowd at USAA.

Er, no, we wouldn’t be better off with Obama than with Romney, for many reasons. Before we get to those reasons, let’s note that Newt Gingrich, at least, does get this right:

Obama”care” was robo-signed by Congress, and is therefore illegal.

Obama”care” was 2700 pages long, but is still being written, but not by Congress: witness the forced contraception coverage recently.

Obama”care” has caused “The Catholic Spring.”

Obama”care” reduces competition, and therefore is illegal by the 1890 Sherman Anti-Trust Law.

Obama”care” is designed to be a US Federal Government monopoly, with no competition.

Obama”care” also is illegal according to the US Constitution, because it violates our freedom of choice.

Will THE NINE SUPREMES notice any of these three violations? I seriously doubt it.

Impeached Bill Clinton proved that the US President is above US Federal Law, so anything that the President wants he gets, regardless of the Federal Laws that he has violated.

If Romney is the RNC’s Nominee, Obama”care” will be taken off the table as a campaign topic.

BTW, no wonder the Liberal Agenda Media, LAM, and Obama wants the “divisive” Republican Primary Campaign to end and anoint Romney - - - .

Romney loves this country and wants to save it from Obama's destruction.

PUKE ALERT. Romney is a self-serving socialist who neither understands nor cares about this country nor its traditional values. He's more similar to Bill Clinton, John Corzine and Barack Obama than any other Republican candidate we have. I gladly supported John McCain over him, despite McCain not being my first choice. McCain was far more conservative than Romney. What makes Romney worse than Obama for sure is that he would be redefining the brand of the Republican party, which the Tea Party has been trying to redefine as a conservative party. Romney would stop that movement dead in its tracks and possibly kill it forever if he wins. Unless you thought New Coke was a good idea, it's not a good idea to vote for Romney.

His entire candidacy is a complete joke, and his followers keep on having to explain what he “really meant”, or what he was “actually saying”.

When you have an opponent, Romney, and his RINO media cohorts willing to lie and misquote everything the conservative candidates say, you do have that problem, yes. This is the guy who destroyed Newt's candidacy by lying, saying he "resigned in disgrace." For you to come around blame the victim when he tries to defend himself is very unfair and is exactly what Romney is trying to accomplish.

LibLieSlayer, I understand your sentiments. Romney is a very flawed candidate when it comes to representing consertive principles. But I would vote for my cat over obama in the general if she were the candidate.

We are not there, yet.

The chorus right now is to end the primary, and hand it to Romney, essentially. There is still an ongoing primary. Now is not the time to quit, IMO.

It’s about who we think is best suited to defeat Obama and the democrats.

NO IT ISN'T. If it was, you should be drafting Hillary. It's about electing a CONSERVATIVE who will support conservative policies. Romney is a liar so all we can do is go by his track record in Massachusetts, where he was a huge liberal and the most extreme definition of a RINO that you can find. Therefore, there is virtually no difference between electing Obama or Romney, except by electing Romney you can help destroy the Republican brand name. Sort of like if you took over a famous winery and decided to put Kool-Aid into the bottles instead.

Your points cover about 98% of all politicians in this country....maybe the universe. We have serious business at hand. We have to win the government back at every level. To pose as a person who cares and then degrade the front runner on our side reminds me of the “none of the above” voters. We have to win and make our side heard. Newt should have been heard more but Santorum took center stage thanks to the media. Now they have him playing with an etch a sketch. We can make our leaders...even if it’s Romney. We can mold them. We can grow them....but we can’t make them grow up. Santorum acts like a kid.
We had a ready-made advocate for Conservatives in Rick Perry but he was rejected by some of the same hate-Romney crowd. He was rejected by FReepers. He was an icon for conservatism both in his political life and personal life. Romney is not Corzine. I don’t like jumping on the train or getting in the boat or whatever cute little slogan out there. We’re in the trenches now. Anyone but Obama.

Let the primary dust settle so we can get about the business of winning this election.

Who's "we?" If there's not a conservative on the ballot, me as a conservative won't have anything to fight for. I didn't get involved in the Hillary vs. Obama primary and won't get involved in Romney vs. Obama either. I'll be happy to show up and vote for conservatives in Congress though.

Do you think what Santorum says should be hidden?...when it shows what he really thinks.

Do you think what Romney's adviser said should be minimalized and that the title Drudge used today shows equal treatment of the two candidates? See JediJones post 36.

"SANTORUM SNAPS...." ??????? Does that word not evoke mental instability (especially in light of the current common media synopsis of what happened in Afghanistan)

I merely made the comment that this type of banner is typical for Drudge on his ongoing endorsement for Romney.

“It’s about electing a CONSERVATIVE who will support conservative policies.”

We agree on that account; but who among the candidates do YOU consider a conservative? Because there’s no consensus on who’s the TRUE conservative, Romney’s been able to run about, buck-wild, pretending to be the solution to Obama.

at this point, is protect the Party Platform and help to push Romney to the right.

You have got to be kidding! WHAT PARTY PLATFORM WITH ROMNEY???

Romney is no different than voting dem. He is the first Republican candidate that I can not even hold my nose to vote for. For the first time in my life I will not vote for a republican for president thanks to the loony rinos.

With Romney you lose.

If Obama stays in office the fallout from his socialistic disaster can be laid at the feet of the Democrats. If we elect Romney, (and he continues the socialistic policies) we will own the disaster.

BINGO

Too subjective.

I’m still not seeing a big difference. How much did Romney cut taxes in Mass. for instance?

Can't accuse of Santorum of being afraid to rock the boat. Good for him. The point is simple : do you want a known combatant on the line in front of you as a target? or do you want a part of the establishment at your back targeting you? One is Obama and the other is Romney. I agree with Rick. I'm pleased he had the guts to say so. He wasn't my first choice, nor my second -- not conservative enough -- but I'll take him over Romney in a New York minute.

I would have gladly supported anyone who ran in the primary except Romney, Ron Paul or Gary Johnson. I was for Newt most of the time but Perry became my second choice. Santorum is totally acceptable. I don’t disqualify someone because on maybe 10% of votes they got pulled in the wrong direction. He is willing to get out there and defend his principles, not simply cave in every time the going gets tough. That’s one of the most important criteria for being a president, to be a leader, not just a finger-in-the-wind follower.

I don’t care who is the “front runner.” What if it was Hillary Clinton? When would the candidate go to far to the left for you? Romney’s way far over the line for me based on his record as governor. He was socially and fiscally liberal. And on military and national security credibility, he’s shown no more prowess than Herman Cain did, and disturbingly even supported Obama’s domestic security initiative.

We weren’t even able to pull Bush, Sr. to the conservative side even after he promised not to raise taxes. We’d have better luck pushing Obama to be conservative because our party might actually fight for it. They’ll just be rubber-stamping everything Romney does as “team players,” not to mention many want a more liberal platform anyway so they can keep up their cocktail party cred.

Because there’s no consensus on who’s the TRUE conservative, Romney’s been able to run about, buck-wild, pretending to be the solution to Obama.

The polls show that the most conservative voters are generally not voting for Romney. The "very conservatives" never do, the "somewhat conservatives" wobble, and the moderates and liberals are voting for him. The "somewhat conservatives" are our problem I guess. If they were voting against Romney he wouldn't win. The polls show they've gone wobbly because they believe that "only Romney can beat Obama." I haven't heard any conservative argue for Romney on ANY basis except electability. As for me, I neither agree that Romney is the most conservative nor the most electable, but these people seem to be buying the RINO media spin. The other problem is the Mormons are generally conservative, but they are voting as an almost 100% block for Romney and turning out in huge numbers (25% turnout in Nevada but they're 7% of the population). Without the block Mormon vote, Romney probably wouldn't be winning either.

You mention Rick Perry and I can’t help thinking that it is we conservatives who put us all in this fine pickle we find ourselves in.

We (though not me) lied about Rick Perry on Guardisil and we (though not me) lied about Rick Perry on border issues...

...and now we’ve got a choice between Howdy Doody Rick and Magic Underwear Willard.

We are so f*’d. And we did it to ourselves by not giving GOOD people a chance.
