WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder and six counts of assault and attempted murder related to a March 11 shooting spree in Afghanistan, a senior U.S. defense official said Thursday.
The charges are expected to be announced Friday. The official could not explain why the count is now 17, when 16 have been reported killed in the incident.
Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne, told CNN that he did not respond to leaks and that he would not comment before seeing the charges against his client.

He needs a military trial, altura. It will be swifter and tougher, IF he is guilty.
Pray for snow.
Clever.
Nice bunch we have here. Really nice.
You know,I seem to remember a certain Major Hassan is awaiting trial for killing 13 Americans.Where is that story at,I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Just saying.....
Do tell.
That is a completely different situation. moslems get to kill whoever they want.
Isn’t that the reason we are in Afghanistan? To make sure the moslems get their way?/s
These people have already hung this poor dumb bastard out to dry. Just like Lt. Calley in that other mess that I was involved in ( Vietnam
). I’ve already seen news reports about some legal problems he had before he entered the service and then some negative references to his housing situation in Washington state. Just another example of the MSM carrying water for the Administration’s attempts to make them not accountable for a situation for which they are to blame. This man should never have been sent back a fourth time after suffering an injury. I did three tours in VN and believe me I was batsh*t crazy on that third tour so mmuch so that after a thirteen year career in the Marine Corps I was shipped back home and given a section 8 discharge. It’s only by the grace of God that my breakdown didn’t cause any casualties other than my sanity. If they convict this man it will be a worse crime than he has been charged with.
Agreed. Bales may very well be guilty as charged, but the story still makes no sense.
“Shoot straight you bastards, don’t make a mess of it.”
You know anything about this mystery number 17?
I am still not convinced that the Taliban killed them and set him up.
Did you hear that Karzai’s two brothers went out to make nice and had to flee when the Taliban opened fire on them?
Maybe he did this to draw attention to the stupidity of how “this war” is fought. Maybe he did this to try to save his brothers in arms from the stupidity, cause outrage at home. Maybe.... Bales does not seem like the cowardly killer type. He did this for a reason.
As I suspected, there appears to be a constant thread of Bales being violent when drunk.
Another instance today.
No, this is the first I’ve heard of it.
Maybe he was just tired and wanted to come home.
I know I’m tired of it. And I just can’t can’t can’t place any blame on any of our soldiers for killing anyone over there.
Obama and even his predecessor just haven’t done a very good job of things over there.
Too many of ours dead. Too many wounded. Too many coming home needing help but kill themselves instead.
Same here, this fits right in with all the other "crimes" from Iraq and Afghan with trumped up charges and no evidence at all. Terrorist have no problem at all killing anyone. If Bales went nuts, he would have killed American soldiers.
