The north part of the country, centered around Timbuctou, is Muslim, almost 100%. The southern part of the country, centered around Bamako (the capital), is a mix of Christian and Muslim, and is very moderate in their views.
The northern region has been stirring up problems for years now and the violence and lawlessness has creeped further and further south.
If I remember correctly the Dakar road race had to detour around one section of Africa a few years back because of this.
Tombouctou, not "Timbouctou, just for the record. :-)
