Hundreds of French police officers and special forces…and they can’t take down a single, skinny Muslim wimp?
In August of 1968 I was in Paris for 2 days waiting for the charter flight home. That was the summer of the massive French student riots.
For grins and giggles a group of us decided to visit Place Pigalle. What a stinking pit. Like Baltimore's Block but without it's "charm".
Suddenly there was the ooh-gah sound of the Parisian Gendarmie mini-vans. Five of them unloaded about 20 gendarmes complete with lead shot loaded capes and truncheons. The all rushed into a hole in the wall dive. Screams, sounds of breaking glass and furniture went on for about 8 minutes. We were expecting tear gas any minute and were ready to beat feet, when a clot of a dozen flics emerged supporting a drunken giggling skinny Algerian who couldn't have weighed more than 95 lbs. We hung around waiting for the rest miscreants to be hauled out. But it was only that one skinny drunk. We were not impressed.
So 44 years later with typical Gallic efficiency there's another skinny Algerian but more than 300 armed flics sitting out a multi day siege. Somewhere in France the retired gendarmes are reading today's news with disgust and ragging about "back in the day" we knew how to knock heads.
