'Former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman has landed the role of the Time Lord's new companion in Doctor Who, the BBC has confirmed.
Producer Steven Moffat announced the actress will replace Karen Gillan's character Amy Pond when she leaves the show in the next series.
Coleman, 25, has also appeared in Waterloo Road and Julian Fellowes' four part mini-series Titanic.
The star said: "I am beyond excited. I can't wait to get cracking."
Coleman, who will make her first appearance in the Christmas special, added that she is a "huge fan" of the show.
The actress, who is from Blackpool, revealed she auditioned alongside Matt Smith, who plays the 11th Doctor.
Filming for the new series of Doctor Who began in Wales last month "It was fun and I felt like we were in it together."
Smith is set to return as the Time Lord in the new series of Doctor Who, which starts later this year.'

Maybe he meant he got a little chubby...
She sure gave me one.
I like petite short girls.
Romana II, Leela, Tegan, and Jo Grant were big favorites of mine.
Same here. Love them.
yes but then Gallifrey fell.
(what did happen to the actress?)
Sarah Jane, Romanadvoratrelundar I, Rose, Donna, Amy & River.
Sadly, that is the problem with a lot of shows. Have to look past that, and can most of the time. Unfortunately, some leftist writers go way overboard - that's why I can't stomach Torchwood, the gay stuff is sick.
I love Amy and Rory and I will be sad to see them go. However, no one is a companion forever.
My favorite old series companion was Leela. She was kick a&&.
Stephen Moffat has done a good job taking over the duties of head Dr. Who creator.
Richard Dawkins?
What stole her brain?
Donna has been in a couple episodes of the Office recently.
My favorite companions was Rose, Martha, and Donna (she was annoying at first)... I never did see the old Dr Who..
Sara, Leela, Donna, and ACE! Oh, and of course K-9
Ace was great, even if Sylvester McCoy made a wretched Doctor.

Adored Amy Pond. Love this series so much, though it will be hard, I will give the new gal a half a chance—with a request. No more “romance” for the Doc. Billy was great, Amy’s crush on the Doc was cute, but enough with that. He’s a a Time Lord, and ought to be a bit above that stuff by now.
Dating myself a bit here, but he’s one of the few companions who actually died as a part of the plotline. Gave his life for the human race.
I love Dr. Who. We named our daughter Sara Jane. Had to spell it different for family reasons but close enough. We also have a summer project planned. We’re building a TARDIS rabbit hutch. If we actually finish it, I’ll post pictures. :0)
