Rush had a caller within the last year who works in the energy business - can’t remember if it was nuclear or oil - but I remember him saying that recent scientific studies are now leaning towards the idea that it is a thermonuclear process happening at the earth’s core and that the by-product is oil that rises to the top.

Thermonuclear only happens in suns and H-Bombs. There is almost certainly some fission of Uranium going on at the Earth's core, but fusion is a whole different ball game. Even if it did fusion makes helium, and sometimes lithium. You aren't going to get oil as a result of a fusion reaction. Not the kind a body as small as Earth could survive in any case.
