I have a Coptic friend who escaped Eritrea in the 1970s and fled to Yugoslavia under Tito and then later came to the US. He told me how much freedom there was under Tito (a dictator) compared to Eritrea and since I had lived in Yugoslavia under Tito, I was just amazed. Up until being granted independence in 1993, Eritrea was officially part of Ethiopia, so I assume he meant "Muslim-controlled section of Ethiopia". With independence, Eritrea made Ethiopia a land-locked country.

He said Ethiopia, no Etretria, however his restaurant says it is Eretraian, so I am assuming that is the part of the country he is from.
