Gingrich Is in No Hurry to Bow Out [Gingrich has "grand ambitions"]

March 13, 2012 Gingrich Is in No Hurry to Bow Out Even After Falling Short of Double Wins in Deep South, Former Speaker Still Sees a Way to Push Fight to the Convention

By JANET HOOK and DANNY YADRON

BILOXI, Miss.—Even as pressure mounts on Newt Gingrich to drop out of the Republican presidential contest, the former House speaker is preparing to stick it out—with a new short-term goal of keeping Mitt Romney from securing the nomination.

Mr. Gingrich faced crucial primary tests Tuesday in Alabama and Mississippi, states where he campaigned hard to jump-start his flagging campaign. He lost both to former Sen. Rick Santorum, though he appeared on track to finish a respectable second in both. Even if he had realized his dream of winning both, though, some Republican officials doubt that would have generated enough momentum to win the nomination.

Still, Mr. Gingrich and his advisers say he isn't going anywhere. In a concession speech, Mr. Gingrich was gracious to Mr. Santorum, while calling the results an indictment of Mr. Romney, widely seen as the front-runner. "I believe that after the primaries are over it will be obvious the so-called front-runner in fact didn't get there, and from that point we will be in a whole different conversation," Mr. Gingrich said.

As those remarks suggest, Mr. Gingrich and his campaign have embraced a new goal, which is to block Mr. Romney. "He believes the long haul is to get enough delegates to stop Romney from getting the nomination before the convention," said campaign chairman Bob Walker, a former congressman. "If Romney is stopped, I don't think he gets the nomination at the convention."

No, I don’t have it in writing. BUT.....after what Mitt’s campaign and his superpac did to Newt, I see Newt going back into private life before he EVER does a deal with Mitt. His mission now is to hurt Romney at every turn. Mitt and his E-supporters attacked Newt in a way that was truly devastating to him, they re-wrote history in order to attack him. You don’t mess with history, as far as Newt is concerned. You want to talk Judas, well let’s look at.... nah, I won’t go there.

“I dont see anyone asking the THIRD PLACE candidate (Romney) if he is ready to bow out”

You probably haven’t read this:

“By placing third in Alabama and Mississippi, losing to Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich in both states, Romney has gone from inevitable to unelectable. Somebody strap him to the roof of one of his Cadillacs and drive him off to one of his many mansions.”

“One of the great legends of political consulting is the Dog Food Problem: an apocryphal tale of a company that had the best packaging, the best advertising, the best marketing. But there was only one problem: the dog wouldn’t eat it. Forevermore we should no longer call it a Dog Food Problem. We should call it a Mitt Romney Problem.

In truth Romney is still probably the most likely GOP nominee. He has the most money, the best organization, the most endorsements, and the best hair. There is only one thing wrong with the Mitt Romney campaign: Mitt Romney. If he were smart he would do nothing but run ads and run away. Let the very impressive Ann Romney do the person-to-person campaigning, because the hard truth is the more voters see Mitt Romney, the less they like him.”

“Newt seems to remember who the enemy is, ALL the time.”

I agree completely. He does. But that’s precisely why he won’t be able to get the support he needs from this electorate. They are just too dumb, too brainwashed and too uninterested in constitutional issues to go with him in the general.

That being said, the conservative base is not going to put him over the top in the primary anyway.

It’s a mess alright.

I think it's clear in his post that he believes in conservative policies, but doesn't think that Santorum communicates or defends them well.

Conservative policies will work if they are passed. With a Republican House and Senate, which is likely in 2013, they will pass. That will make a President Santorum very popular.

I'm pretty this newbie is an obamabot/romneybot

What a load of crap. I'm the one supporting the only candidate that can beat Romney while you're tearing him down.

You're brain dead if you don't realize that this is a two-man race and that Santorum is a far better candidate.

You're the one doing nothing but helping Romney.

LOL! No, but our little son asked if God was made of hollow wood.
We'd say The Lord's Prayer at bedtime and one night he knit his little eyebrows together and earnestly tried to picture it, since His name is "hallowed."

Agree Onyx. It is very curious as to why the evangelicals endorsed Santorum over Perry. Did you look into the background of a few of the endorsers? I did and one is extremely right wing.

Don't get me wrong..I am all in for God, country and apple pie which is why I believe Newt is the right man. As for Romney being responsible for what happened to Cain and Perry..I believed that too. The sad thing is..Cain blamed Perry and I really don't think Perry would ever dream of doing anything so sleezy. Perry ran an honorable campaign.

Santorum was overlooked by Romney and it wasn't until several state primaries and after the intense damage done to Newt that RS picked up voters. Santorum also got on the Romney bandwagon of "I've been married a hundred years to one woman. Yes, the primary has been explosive, vicious and in the end may do considerable damage to the gop..thanks to the E.

“No gripe with you in particular—I’m just getting really, really tired of the absolutist statements that some of our candidates can’t beat Obama. And I figured I’d rather point that out to someone who shares my candidate preference rather than picking on a Santorum or Romney supporter. ;-)”

Thanks, FRiend :-) I sincerely hope you’re right that any of our candidates can beat BHO. It won’t be easy regardless, due to dirty tactics and the public’s gullibility. But I can’t imagine things getting significantly better to favor BHO as far as jobs, gas, unemployment, etc., by November. I AM afraid he’ll get us into another war or two (Syria, Iran) to scare people from “changing horses in midstream” and I AM afraid of massive voter fraud.

Also, our nominee will have to relentlessly focused in the face of major diversions such as those that have worked so far, to keep bringing the fight back to BHO and his record, along with detailed plans for an alternative action on every issue. I see Santorum as easily led down side paths of religious/social/moral issues, and Mittens...well, he’s just uninspiring and without passion. I envision him as praising BHO personally and being PC to a fault, like McCain in ‘08.

That’s my gut feeling, but I pray I’m wrong.
