My county got a $20,000 bill for fees for a permit for landfill operation from the (CA) regional water quality control board. This was a huge jump, so it was questioned. They said that their budgets had been cut by the state legislature, so they were passing on the costs in higher fees.

Counties always have to justify any increase in fees by proving that they are not in excess of the actual cost of the services performed. Apparently, the state agencies don’t have those limitations and can pass along any budgetary shortfalls in their fees. No wonder businesses are going broke.

$20000..that’s a pretty expensive piece of paper.

Would that be more or less expensive than an online degree in regional water quality control??

(That number is SO off I had to ask that.)
