It looks like I may not have selected the "ml" at the end of the address. Proper link is here. Sorry about that.

OK. Not clear from this whether the daughter got hold of an official issue gun or some other one. Police don’t forget their official guns too often, but it happens and they should be kept on a short leash about those. If it was his private gun that is a tragedy but it sounds like nothing illegal.

Loaded gun plus children equals disaster. Keep them secure at all times. I hate reading these articles totally unnecessary.

Loaded gun plus UNTRAINED children equals disaster.

There, fixed it for you. I left guns on the coffee table when the kids were bitty mites. They knew better. They didn't play with power saws either.

I kept loaded firearms in every room of the home and every vehicle from before my kids were conceived until now.

The youngest turns 30 the end of next month. Secure the kids, not the firearms.

P.S. - the guns were lost in an unfortunate kayaking incident last year.

Maybe nothing illegal, but watch how easy the cop gets off.

I'll bet they don't go after all his guns and/or give him the rectal exam they'd do to you or me.

"Secure the kids, not the firearms."

Correct. A time-tested (as in for centuries, folks) approach that works. Even very young children can understand the difference between "toy" and "real" IF THEY ARE EXPOSED TO BOTH. And the earlier the better (age four is NOT "too young"). But either letting them ONLY handle toys (or worse, neither) is just sowing the ground for catastrophe, as they WILL think "toy" when they are first confronted with a real weapon, unless they are TRAINED otherwise.
