WASHINGTON Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger said Sunday that Russia's president-elect Vladimir Putin is a "patriot" who could turn out to be a constructive partner with the United States on certain issues.
Kissinger said Putin, who was elected to a third term as president in an election marred by irregularities and protests against his rule, "is not anti-western."
"He is, above all, a Russian patriot who feels humiliated by the experience of the 1990s, which were in the most formative period of his career," Kissinger said in an interview with CNN, referring to the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and the crisis that followed.
"He is very resentful of what he interprets as intervention in Russian domestic affairs and even more, of course, in what he may interpret and does interpret as some American tendencies to support his political opponents in order to encourage his overthrow," he said.

Putin a Russian patriot - we have to keep in mind that he is not an American. Still, he is far more on America’s side in everything of importance than Obama is.
You are totally wrong. Putin is on Obama’s side against America. Obama and Putin are good comrades.
The only thing Russians have to be proud of is that they threw off the yoke of the EVIL EMPIRE that enslaved them, but Putin is not proud of that, he regrets it.
>> Kissinger says Putin is a ‘patriot’ ???
- Kissinger says Putin ‘humiliated’
- Kissinger says Putin ‘resentful’
- “were in the most formative period” (past tense, over, fini)
I don’t see a problem with Kissinger’s remarks save the headline tease.
He said Putin is not anti-western, but he is. Putin is a Eurasianist who supports a Eurasian Union hostile to the values of western civilization.
I’m open to the criticism, but I’m not drawing any definite conclusions based on the reported quotes and excerpts.
I believe that what he is ashamed of, is that Russia allowed itself to sink down to the point of losing their national pride. That is why he brought back some of the historical regiments of the Tsar, as well as some of the regiments that fought in WWII. Putin is a devout Orthodox Christian, and keeps a Bible on his desk.
Do you really think Putin, the top Russian military leaders, etc. want Russia to become an islamic state?
Putin wants to rob his people blind and move all his stolen wealth to Lichtenstein and Switzerland. He does not care at all what happens to the nation he has destroyed once his brutal tyranny inevitably collapses just like the EVIL EMPIRE. If you believe Putin is a Christian then you probably believe Mitt Romney just loves them cheesy grits y’all. Don’t be so naive and gullible. Putin is a politician, he is 100% phony and fake and he has pulled the wool over your eyes.
I was hoping that you would offer your opinion, and perhaps some facts to support your opinion. that's how we learn from one another here.
I have no use for insults. You are, of course, free to answer any way you wish. But if you just want to insult, I'd prefer you not answer at all.
Sorry but blaming America first for Russia’s unprovoked hostility to us because we didn’t kiss KGB Putin’s ass enough and help him reconstruct the Soviet Union is stupid. To say that Russia is a natural ally against islam is also stupid and ignorant. Russia is a natural ally with islam against us. That’s why they support all our islamic enemies against us. If you don’t want to be insulted then don’t say stupid things. Don’t come to a pro-American website and criticize the USA for not kissing the asses of our anti-American KGB enemies enough.
You just don’t get it. I am not an expert on every last thing, but neither are you.
As I said before, I would very much like to hear opinions, backed up with facts where possible. But I have no use for insults.
Tailgunner is not rational in his russophobia:) Russia for him is something like Israel for muslims.
I think he is a Georgian president. Don’t you, Joe?:)
