From the beginning of the Republic, there was a love/hate relationship between the government and the media, but it wasn't until Watergate and Nixon that the media was able to bring down an American President they hated. And they really liked that power. Soon they realized that they could not just report the actions of the government, but influence policy decisions. They actively worked to protect politicians whose policies they supported, and opposed pols whose policies and values they opposed, but in ways never seen before.
Finally, in 2008, they actually installed their own government into power. And "the media" effectively become both a tool of the government, as well as a 4th branch of the government.
