Sources close to the Gingrich campaign say preliminary "what-if" conversations are underway that could lead to a Gingrich-Perry ticket being announced prior to the Republican National Convention at the end of August.
Gingrich aides hope forming a predetermined ticket with Perry will unite the evangelical, Tea Party and very conservative voters that make up the core of the GOP.
As discussions got underway, two senior aides to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who dropped out of the race and endorsed Gingrich, had not heard of the potential ticket and seemed dismissive. One noted that in the past, Perry has likened the Vice Presidency to a bucket of warm spit. Still, Gov. Perry volunteered his services when he endorsed Gingrich in South Carolina, so he may be on board if it's little more than a joy ride in a trial balloon.

"[J}oy ride in a trial balloon," cool. Carl Cameron has a literary streak, not easy for a reporter on deadline.
Smart! I like it.
ping.
Sounds good to me, too.
Bump
Well, it looks like we’ll soon see all the Perry haters start in on Newt, now.
The real question is which two teams (Team 2 is Mittens and Rue. Team 1 is Rick and Newt) will together have more than 1,144 delegates at the end of the primary/caucus season. If it’s Team 1 we have a conservative team. If it’s Team 1 was have two people with ideas almost as destructive of and dangerous to America as Team Obama.
One says we are heartless to illegals, one says we are inhumane. Not sure this ticket would get a lot of support from those who want tougher immigration enforcement.
Multiple grammatical & spelling errors. That always irritates me in others, so sorry about that.
Don’t believe it for a second. The other way maybe.
I’m in!
Palin for energy department.
Perry is heads and shoulders the best choice in the original field - a crying shame he is out.
I’d rather see Allen West debating Biden.
I agree...this might have worked right at the Florida primary time but now it’s nothing.
I think the *only* way to stop Romney is Santorum/Gingrich, or Gingrich/Santorum, with the former being much more likely.
I can get behind that one.
Gingrich is the most qualified man in the U.S. to be President. Kerry is the most successful governor in the U.S. This sounds like a winning ticket to me.
Uhh, I’m not so sure this is a good idea. I love Newt, and I love Perry’s platform of eliminating federal agencies, but I fear that the perception of Perry’s mental acuity has plummeted so low that this would only serve to hurt Newt.
Yes indeed. Maybe even more destructive for conservative as Romney is dispiriting for the cause while at least Obama energizes conservatism.
Should we just go ahead and report abuse on them now?
@*%@!(_@+s.
