Longer ago than I’ll admit, MY Navy named aircraft carriers after FAMOUS ships (ie. Boxer, Wasp, Ranger etc) or historic naval battles, such as MIDWAY. Many of the CVE’s (jeep carriers) were name to honor even land battles, such as St. Lo and others.
Thus our ships were born with a proud legacy.
It will not be the same Navy without an ENTERPRISE.

There have been a bunch of ships named Enterprise.

I always thought it interesting that the series “Star Trek” used that name too.

Roger that, Captain. I was the XO of the Marine Detachment on the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) in the early 70s. A great ship with a proud history.

In the mid 90s I was driving thru Baltimore and glanced out the window to see the 43 once again. She was being cut up for scrap. Even though I wasn’t a sailor, I still felt a twinge of regret about her circumstances.

Semper Fi,

We are still using famous names for the LPH/marine carriers. The lead ship of the next class, USS America is under contruction.
