Rough Service basically means a thicker filament structure. These bulbs are usually rated for a higher voltage - 130 volts. When operated at normal line voltages - around 117 volts - they will last up to three time longer. I've been using these types of bulbs in my installations for years and would highly recommend them.

The bad news is, rough service bulbs may give slightly “redder” light and won’t be as efficient in the usual visible light spectrum. Still, guaranteed to beat the cr#$% out of the garbage flourescents. I have three dead “100W equivalents” of those so far. I can’t afford to save any more money.

The 75 and 100 watt incandescent lamps we’ve bought over the past couple of years have been terribly weak. Give the lamp a good bump and the filament breaks. I’d say we lose more bulbs from mild bumps than from normal end of life.
