Iraqi activists sounded the bell over the killing of dozens of teenagers by religious police for having emo haircuts.
Activists told the Cairo-based al-Akhbar daily that at least 90 Iraqi teenagers with emo appearances have been stoned to death by the Moral Police in the country in the past month. The violent crackdown against emo Iraqi teenagers came after the Iraqi interior ministry declared them as devil worshippers.
The Emo phenomenon or devil worshiping is being probed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate it as soon as possible since its detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger, a statement by the Interior Ministry said.
They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationery that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities, the statement added.
The statement said that Iraqs Moral Police was granted approval by the Ministry of Education to enter Baghdad schools and pinpoint students with Western appearances.
The activists told the newspaper that a group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing led the teenagers to secluded areas a few days ago, stoned them to death, and then disposed their bodies in garbage dumpsters across the capital, Baghdad.
First they throw concrete blocks at the boys arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead by then, they start all over again, one person who managed to escape told the daily. The exact death toll remains unclear, but Hana al-Bayaty of Brussels Tribunal, an NGO dealing with Iraqi issues, said the current figure ranges between 90 and 100.
Activists said that leaflets were distributed in Baghdad warning teenagers from donning the emo style, and in some regions, teenage homosexuals were killed by battering their heads also by concrete blocks.
If you remove the widespread STDs, massive drug use, abortion as birth control, petty theft, aborted suicide attempts ‘cutting’ and such, then no, they really cause no problem to society at all.
My daughter, now 22, went to school with lots of early emos. Trust me. It isn’t all cute hair and weird clothing.
And he’s a bender unit.
You got me there. I didn’t know that.
Same here. Some of my Hispanic students go emo, and they are almost always the smarter ones who enjoy reading, and don't get into hip-hop and thug culture. This is tragic.
What's really happening here is that they are murdering any kid who shows an inclination for American culture. And some here don't get it.
I try my best to ask my kids what is going on in “their world”. I know many parents don’t. I guess they figure that being a teen is easier than being an adult responsible for a mortgage, a job etc... However, I feel that “their world” is important to them at the time. The peer pressures to do bad stuff is always present. (especially for the girls compared to when I was their age). I wouldn’t want to be a young person today.
Me too. Moral Police? Looks like the only thing we’ve accomplished over there is creating West Iran.
None of our 3 teens are emo, thank God. At our local rural high school there is some emo overlap with the other teenage labelling...the jocks, the nerdy & geeky brains, the preppies all seem to overlap their social circles. Our youngest is a real artist and I see many in the arts and music groups who lean towards emo in dress but they don’t listen to mostly emo music.
I see the emo mentality broadly as another function of the current age of broken marriages and general societal dysfunction - prime example: democrats, lol, though here they are just kids who went to the mall, kids of rural working class families that are pretty much good people with limited education. The tend to grow out of it by the end of senior year.
islam means Submission, aka Slavery.
Your experience with emo sounds more suburban Edvard Munch than what I have seen out here in amishland...they come across more pythonesque here such as the teen girl in the movie Local Hero.
Many do, thank God for them, but the problem is that the experience may leave them covered in tattoos and body piercing to the point where they are unhireable. And that assumes they havent fallen to drug addiction or been ‘gifted’ with an untreatable STD.
It’s not like it was for Gen-Xers. Sure, we had our issues, but the worst of our group was at best midway up the modern vice and self destruction ladder. We hoped for a better tommorow. Many Emos dispise the concept of ‘tomorrow’.
That is sort of amazing that the artsy/musically inclined kids dress emo (although they aren’t severe about it). I wonder if they see it as a kind of “uniform”? You know how the jocks will dress in Under Armour, Nike stuff? The Preppies have their style of dress. Perhaps, in your area... the pseudo-Emo “look” is their uniform. Either way, it must be a “temporary hat” of sorts since most grow out of it by the time they are 17/18.
Yeah, me too. Fortunately for me, geeks make good money.
We liberated their persons. Why the hatred of Western appearances? Remember Operation Iraqi Freedom?
These people have proved to me all I will ever know about them or care to know about their DEMOCRACY. Bring all of our troops home and wash our hands of Islamic savages. Muslims who immigrate to our homeland must live by our laws.
LOL! Good thinking!
In smaller towns they don’t have the opportunities that suburb/city kids have to go full tilt overboard. The druds and such are there but not so easy to get or as popular. There is less peer pressure as well.
But the net is a great equalizer in a lot of waus, bringing all of the mental aspects of Emo culture to the smallest of places. And the peer pressure, if only online.
Sure there are the ‘normal’ kids that dress the part and thats about it. That’s no biggie. But the entire culture is as destructive to a family and to society as a ‘cultural’ movement gets. All my ranting aside, spend some time searching “Emo” on the web to get a glimpse of what it’s really about. It isn’t fun and games. The suicide rates prove that.
Fair warning, you will come across a LOT of self-shot porn.
Then I guess I'm "emo" -- I've felt that way ever since November 2008.
I will not look for it - I can see enough when we drive an hour into suburbia to go to a mall. I’m glad the closest article of clothing my youngest has is a black graphic Tee with angel wings across the back and on the front an antiquated cross with lots of filagree design around it...aside from that some wild nail polish colors. She just started switching over to all white pants and white graphic tees.
As said earlier,we ALL were better off with strongman dictators keeping the savages restrained.
And Bush paved the way for obama as well.
The temporary hat is a great way of looking at teen fashions...we’ve got a bench chest filled with their hats, lol.
