If anyone wants to see the most absolutely ghastly attempt at a Southern accent, check out the obscure film “Her Secret” (1933), in which a British actress, Sari Maritza, portrays a Georgia gal. It’s jaw-dropping. Her bizarrely surreal ‘slow drawl’ makes her come across as someone brain-damaged.
I'm going to have to check that one out, just for curiosity's sake.
You know, I've never understood why actors and actresses seem to be able to manage any accent well, except for a Southern one. They almost always get it wrong (and the WORST is when they use "y'all" to address one person). Incidentally, the actors on "The Walking Dead" all do a wonderful job of speaking Southern----and two of them are British!
