JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled some pardons issued by former Gov. Haley Barbour are valid. Republican Barbour pardoned 198 people before finishing his second term Jan. 10, including four convicted murderers and a robber who worked as inmate trusties at the Governor's Mansion. Of those pardoned, 10 were in jail at the time.
Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood challenged the pardons. Hood argued before the Supreme Court on Feb. 9 that some pardons didn't meet the requirements of the Mississippi Constitution, which says people seeking pardons must publish notices for 30 days in a newspaper.
Hood has contended the trusties and about 165 others didn't meet that requirement.
Attorneys for Barbour and some of pardon recipients had argued the governor's pardon power can't be challenged.
Mississippi Ping
Valid, but wrong.
of course they are valid. they were also spectacularly ill-advised.
you had to be drunk or a democrat attorney general looking to score political points to think otherwise.
Bogus but unsurprising.
I suspect they are valid. Nonetheless, it sure destroyed any respect I used to have towards Barbour. Indeed, over the past three or four years, I’m totally stunned at the levels of mistrust I now feel towards a high percentage of GOP politicians. “Conservative” commentators too.
The path from decent guy to self-serving narcissist is a very short one for politicians.
Yeah, I've admired Barbour for years -- even was hoping he'd run for president. But these pardons are inexplicable. He makes Huckabee look like a piker.
Thank you for the ping WKB, I think.
If Jim Hood wants to do something positive he should propose an amendment to change the Constitution. But grandstanding is a lot more fun.
Isn't that the truth!
...and gets a whole heck of a lot more media coverage as well. I have to stop commenting here to keep from getting in trouble.
“But grandstanding is a lot more fun.”
And, a whole heck of a lot more opportunistic.
