I always thought that the left was for the all-powerful nanny state telling individuals what they may and may not do and the right was for individual liberty and individual responsibility?
Believing in a limited federal government except in those cases where you have some kind of personal objection is simply not ideologically consistent.
The temperance movement at the turn of the 20th century at least realized that the federal government was a limited one and didn’t have the power to ban alcohol — without a Constitutional Amendment granting it the authority to do so.
But “social” conservatives such as yourself know better and want the federal government to enforce the prohibitions of their choosing. The progressives also know better and want the federal government to enforce extra-Constitutional measures of their choosing. Ideologically, social conservatives have a great deal in common with the left. What they want the government to interfere in is the only real difference.

Not quite. There are obviously people who consider themselves "conservative" yet they are as much in favor of Big Government & nanny-statism as many on the Left.
The only difference is on what issues they want the Government to reign over its subjects.
