BOSTON -- Mitt Romney's campaign gathered the national press corps in their campaign war room this morning to deliver a simple message: It would take an "act of God" for any candidate not named Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination.
The Boston-based campaign projected confidence in Romney's ability to win the nomination given the emerging delegate math in the campaign following last night's Super Tuesday contests.
"We will get to 1,144 whether it's on someone elses timeline, or on our timeline," said one top Romney aide. "We will get to 1,144 and be the Republican nominee."
The background briefing with several members of the campaign's senior staff was emblematic of Romney's campaign: no grand flourishes, just business, math and message, with aides asserting the calendar was ill-suited to any candidate looking to eat into Romney's delegate lead.
Looking ahead to a primary calendar where the only remaining true winner-take-all states appear to favor Romney -- Delaware, Utah, New Jersey and the District of Columbia (where Rick Santorum is not on the ballot) -- the advisers tried to slowly close the door on Santorum and Newt Gingrich, who they said had little to no opportunity left to close the delegate gap.
Other delegate-heavy states like California and Texas (the latter thought to be less friendly to Romney) are winner-take-all by congressional district, which all but guarantees their large delegate hauls being split between candidates, rather than award a large haul to a single GOP hopeful. One Romney aide said one would have to "bend the laws of reality," to see Gingrich or Santorum making a significant dent in Romney's lead...

Asked directly when they would begin working behind the scenes to convince the Gingrich and Santorum campaigns to see the math their way, one Romney adviser responded bluntly "now."

I have been praying for months now that God will give us a STRONG Christian president in 2012 who will adhere to Biblical principles regarding marriage, the unborn and poverty.
My God is able. He may or may not do it but he is still ABLE!
I don’t think any of those people are in the running yet.
Im not going to tell God how to do his business but we have Gingrich and Santorum and hopes of a brokered convention.
I wouldn’t put it past God, if I were Mittens. Should he lose, Mittens should acknowledge God’s will.
Oh, dearie dear. Willard may have really messed up his chances with this one. At least, we can pray he did.
..of course, in the movie, the words are spoken rather arrogantly by the actor, Billy Zane.
Dear God, I think Romney just double dog dared You.
IBTZ on Romney.
Romney campaign says losing nomination would take ‘act of God’
Obama replies,”Oh,no I won’t let it happen...oh, wait I keep forgetting I am not thee God.”
He might, but I was more focused on whether Romney gets to 1,144 not which non-Romney candidate wins. I assumed Gingrich drops out prior to April 1.
Of course, if two non-Romney candidates continue to split the non-Romney vote, then Romney will clean up the winner take all states. I don’t assume for a second that 100% of Gingrich votes would go to Santorum but I imagine a 2/3 - 1/3 split in favor of Santorum.
You got that right. Arrogance to the extreme. Mitt and his evil staff can't wait to screw conservatives.
The great joy I have is that Mitt will NEVER get my vote.
Never again will I vote for evil people who worship at the alter of State Power.
Hi. Perhaps Bruce Ismay of the White Star Line in 1912 wasn’t the one who said it before the filming of the whichever version of the Titanic movie you mean. (http://www.titanic1.org/articles/ismay.asp)
Perhaps the statement was used in a movie only, although I heard about it in the 1950’s.
Even if this Titanic line is fiction, Romney’s people said today what they said today.
Not sure what you’re trying to prove by questioning this.
There was a poll of voters showing that a majority preferred a candidate with ‘business’ experience.
The problem with Romney is his potential for considering that we are all his employees.
He better get a grip and realize that a POTUS is employed by us, paid by us and works for us.
Newt understands the concept.
Also, please see post 39, this thread.
Dear Lord, we so don’t need another arrogant person assuming the position of President of this nation. I have felt like we were under judgement ever since the last election.
I can’t help but remember Sarah and her servant’s heart.
God Bless her for voting for Newt!
Wow, that is one arrogant statement. It sounds like the kind of thing that Barack Obama would say. I hope he falls short of a majority at the convention not only for being a RINO, but for saying something so haughty. Having him as the party’s front-runner was bad enough already.
Challenging God is never a wise move.
...THREE non-Romney candidates. I know there are Paul supporters who would also support a very strong Conservative candidate.
Ron Paul may be using his block of support to assist Romney’s bid; it appears that he is. But not all of those in the Paul column are not necessarily transferable directly to the Romney column.
