WASHINGTON -- Amid fresh concerns over the safety of American forces, President Barack Obama on Tuesday said the accidental burning of Qurans in Afghanistan and the retaliatory killings of U.S. troops gave new credence to the need to end the war. "I think that it is an indication of the challenges in that environment, and it's an indication that now is the time for us to transition," Obama said during a White House news conference. Obama announced no speeding up of the NATO-backed plan to end combat missions in Afghanistan at the end of 2014, saying "that continues to be the plan." But he said the violence aimed at Americans in Afghanistan that followed the accidental burning of Qurans on a U.S. base was "unacceptable."
Six Americans were killed in retaliatory violence. Obama offered his apologies to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a move that was roundly criticized by his Republican presidential rivals as weak and unnecessary. From Congress, Obama was getting tugged from another direction. A letter calling for Obama to accelerate the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan had the backing of 23 senators, mostly Democrats but including two conservative Republicans, Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., who circulated the letter with Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said in a statement that there "something fundamentally wrong with spending $88 billion for national building in Afghanistan while we're asking Americans to make tough cuts here at home."
You put your war hand in,
You put your war hand out,
You put your war hand in,
And you shake it all about,
You do the hokey pokey
and you turn yourself around
That what elections are about.

“MIision defeated,” says Husssein.
Obama means “Election Time” has come to wind down the Afghan war.
Good. Our troops should not be dying over some burned up toilet-paper books.
Time to GTFO of that hellhole.
If he really does try to do anything before November other than SAY he’s going to wind down the war, it’s gonna leave a mark. A BIG one. Right across Obama’s campaign.
Agreed. We won the war years ago. We lost the rebuilding process.
Yeah. I’d like to see it wound down by the time we throw Barry’s goatsmellin’ @$$ out of the White Hut in November. He screwed it up pretty bad and Americans are going to have to deal with the messed up economy AND COUNTRY we are going to “inherit” from Barry and the ‘RATS in January. The new administration is going to have to retrain millions of Americans to get up in the morning and go to work again.
To be fair, you can’t nation build with a pack of savages.
Many tears will be shed because this man child has abandoned the idea of victory. He has done ill to the allies we have in Iraq and Egypt. He has lied about his support for Israel. He has turned his back on the forces within Iran that want to overthrow the mullahs.
He is a disaster, making America look like a fair weather friend.
It’s become a NATO circle jerk.
With the real purpose lost. Iran.
They were circled for a reason ~ attack convenience.
Now there is a Iran aligned agent in the White House....
What chaps me is how he gave up Iraq and sold us out in Egypt and Libya
Who wants to be the last to die in Afghanistan?
150% in agreement. Just imagine if we DID win in Vietnam and how much of a nightmare that would have been.
We need to bug out. We are only losing our best to prove that Obama can make defeat out of a victory.
I find myself agreeing... If perhaps for different reasons. The mission there has been pretty well accomplished. We went in there to get Bin Laden, eliminate the leadership of Al Ahead and disrupt their global operations. This has all been done. The Taliban only became the enemy when they gave shelter to OBL. With AQ all but stir-fried, our quarrel with them is moot.
We can be proud of the work our boys have done there. Brilliant stuff. OBL is dead. AQ is a pitiful shell of its former self. They may rebuild... In fact they likely will, but that is now something for another time and place. We’ve given the Afghanis as much of a nation as they’ve ever had... And now it’s up to them to do with their 7th-century culture whatever they will.
Al Ahead = Al Queda.
Dang autocorrect.
We’ll have to remember that this is the definition of “war of necessity, war of choice” next time, won’t we . . . ? Namely “surrender to the very Taliban we went there to get rid of”; you gotta be kidding me. Never mind the “war on terror” having been transformed into an “overseas contingency operation” and a terrorist attack re-varnished as a “man-caused disaster” . . .
