Mitt Romney may have more money than any other presidential candidate in the race, but his wife said today that she does not consider herself wealthy. We can be poor in spirit, and I dont even consider myself wealthy, which is an interesting thing, Ann Romney said in an interview on Fox News. It can be here today and gone tomorrow.

The absurd thing is she laughed out loud right after saying the “poor in spirit” line. Wow. If she keeps this up people might start thinking the Romneys are insincere. Her handlers needed to coach her on that programmed line a lot longer until she “owned” it.
The video clip is here:
a few years ago I lost track of an article I had about Ann Romney describing how poor they were when Romney was in college, as she was describing the details i could n't help but think how well off they seemed to have been during that time.
By the way, the teen girls conversion from Christianity was personally handled by the Governor of her state, Bishop George Romney, who ran as the anti-war Presidential candidate a year later. She was waiting for Mitt to return from France where he was laying low and avoiding the draft while trying to convert Christians in France into Mormonism.
It is something about her; being snobby perhaps.
Hah, as if she or Romney are not wealthy or even sincere...
Creeps me out...these days.
Well ok...she did laugh, nervously I thought, but in general I thought she came off pretty well.
She struck me as shallow, when was she without wealth, power and privilege, as a teen she had the Governor himself personally do her conversion training, a year later he was running for President>
Her cavalier attitude about extraordinary wealth, looks like she is separated from reality, not as though she was sincere and down to earth.
It was another Romney-like gaffe, revealing an inability to relate to normal people.
One thing about the Bushes, they can mix and talk with the working man, and even live, drink, and serve with him in the military.
I’d be nervous too trying to sell that bogus line in a blatant attempt to pander for votes.
Yeah, it really has nothing to do with how much money they have. It’s the fact that they are clearly snobs about it. They view themselves as being in a different, superior class to the rest of us “little people.” And that inevitably leads to them putting in socialist policies to help prop up the poor, downtrodden, helpless folk who they look down on.
Welcome to freerepublic, what are your feelings on Mitt Romney?
I know some people who would be considered extraordinarily wealthy and I never got the idea that they ran around thinking how rich they are....they have the same problems as the rest of us, including health problems - the great equalizer.
I don’t really get why you think she’s shallow - I’d say she’s been lucky. Who would turn it down?
What the heck does “poor in spirit” have to do with wealth? I have always hated that line of thought.
And I would HOPE that she meant “And yes I know we have more money than I know what to do with. And while I enjoy nice things, I am also very frugal in other areas and try not to be wasteful. I still like to mow my own lawn and putz around in the garden, and my attitude is similar to when we were newlyweds just making do.”
Although I guess I am projecting my parents and some of their friends. It might be hard to say that if you are Mrs. Romney with the hired help, and three homes valued at almost $20 million.
I can't see the Bushes being so clumsy with their dismissal of extreme wealth, especially while campaigning during an almost depression period, and especially if they were the ultra rich like the Romneys, and especially if they already were recognized as being completely, utterly, out of touch, as born to the manor snobs and cult leaders who had never mixed with normal Americans, but had lived a separated life of extremely low contamination by none Mormons.
Do you remember Mitt 'sharing our pain' by pointing out that he was also unemployed and knew how it felt? The instinctive $10,000.00 dollar bet, on national TV.
And I don’t consider myself indigent .... Or lame ....
You made a good post, but forgot that Ann and Mitt used illegal Guatemalans to do their gardening, they used them for ten years, were busted by the Boston Globe, and the story died down, a year later in the 2007 debates, Giuliani called out Romney for running a "Sanctuary Mansion" for illegals and Romney of course lied and pretended it was outrageous.
A few days later the Boston Globe busted them AGAIN, it seems that the Romneys had never fired the company, they had kept the illegals for 11 years and it took a second national scandal (and selling the house), to end it.
poor in spirit? I guess he must’ve done some bad deeds like lying?
Mitt is out of touch. He remind me of John Mccain, when he once said that Americans won’t work for $50/hr picking fruit. $50/hr!!!!!!!
Their attraction for each other was that they both had tin ears? Someone needs to take them aside who’s NOT impressed with all that money and lay some reality on them.
Ann, give me half of your not-wealth to try out for about 10 years and I’ll let you know how I feel.
