You could also use an inexpensive NAS like the TonidoPlug, PogoPlug, or one of Synology’s lower-end units. In simple terms, an NAS is like your own personal file server for backing up data. You can even access its files remotely like you can with Carbonite.

Most NAS units have extra features that really come in handy, such as streaming music & videos to smartphones and DLNA-compliant A/V receivers, that make them well worth the investment.

This is exactly what I have used for years - I do it manually once a week. You do not need on on line backup subscription - it only takes a little of your time to make a backup set. Maybe there are even local applications out there that will do it in the background and not require your effort.
