State Sen. Stacey Campfield, co-chairman of Newt Gingrichs campaign in Tennessee, announced today he is quitting that position to support Rick Santorum in the Republican presidential race.
The Knoxville Republican made his announcement in a post on his blog. In an interview, Campfield said he believes that conservatives need to unite behind a single candidate and that Santorum is best positioned to defeat establishment Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
Campfields decision comes after a conversation with Santorum earlier this week.
In his blog post, Campfield said he was twisted inside because of my loyalty to Newt, my loyalty must first lie with my country and getting a country with a conservative leader must take precedence to my own personal whims of fancy.

No, it's not obvious. It's wrong.

In case you weren’t aware. Ignorance reigns... especially with noobs who join to post crap.
“Ditto” from the smart Newt “babe”!
(Oh, I’m laughing so hard, I need a hanky!)
Oh, and Campfield whooo?
It's just that the anti's post a lot. :)
Interesting post. Thanks.

Which undoubtedly means, you support Newt Gingrich. (If you even try to imply Saint Ricky, prepare to become temperately challenged.)
What I will NOT do is become so invested in one or the other, to the point I come across as a jilted schoolgirl when I read something like this, that I end up sabotaging our chances to beat Romney, like you are.
I don't see whats so hard to understand about that.
That's not exactly accurate.
Some people on Free Republic are rabidly anti-Santorum.
Some people on Free Republic have intelligent and thoughtful posts explaining why they think Santorum is not the best candidate to defeat Romney and Obama, and think Gingrich is a better choice. I can respect that.
Some people on Free Republic support Santorum because they think he's got a better chance to defeat Romney and Obama. I'm in that group — I was a very late supporter of Santorum and am well aware of the problems with his candidacy, but I believe it is crucial to defeat Mitt Romney in the primary and believe Santorum has a better chance of doing that than Gingrich.
The site owner, Jim Robinson, has endorsed Newt Gingrich but says either Gingrich or Santorum are fine with him as candidates to defeat Romney.
Please don't assume most people on Free Republic are rabid about anything — except perhaps about the need to defeat Barack Obama.
Prolonging the inevitable won't negate it.
This happens as Newt is rising and Santorum falling.
What?
Gee: I am glad I don’t have loyal friends like that
The wind blows a little and he dumps Newt like a sack of crap.
That’s loyalty?
Newt has a chance to straighten this mess out Sanotrum will be played like a drum by the RINO’s.
>> 6 posts bashing Santorum? Wow.
>> Says it all.
Your boy is an establishment bit player.

To say that is stupid is an understatement.
On a serious note,
I am still blown away by ansel12's discoveries about Santorum.
I am all for Newt Gingrich, but since Santorum is a life long Catholic, I was shocked to learn that his position on LIFE has "evolved" given that the Church's position has always been the same!
Then, why is Santorum ahead of Gingrich everywhere but Georgia?
At some point reality has to set and one has to realize beating Romney and Obama is the goal even if it means accepting someone that isn't perfect.
Let’s see, you’re trying to lecture and insult a ‘98 member on Free Republic, by accusing Principled of helping Romney by supporting Newt Gingrich over Santorum! LOL.
Just who do you think you are, Kazan?
“evolved” alright..........
You mean similar to the way you accepted Newt Gingrich and remained loyal to him through all the vicious attacks? Oh, I almost forgot, you may have been one of the ones attacking him.
